Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: God willing, this chain is hasan.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): It is hasan on account of 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, whose hadith is hasan when used for corroboration (i'tibar).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported by the following hadith of Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him).
Note / Clarification: It is narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) via various routes that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dye his hair, and the same is understood from the narrations of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Reference / Source: In Sahih al-Bukhari (3547) it is narrated from Rabi'ah bin Abi 'Abd al-Rahman that he saw a blessed hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which was red; when he asked, he was told that it had turned red from the effect of perfume (tib).
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/ 239 through Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in "Tahdhib al-Athar" (Musnad of the rest of the Ten: 967) via Hilal bin al-'Ala'.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani recorded it in "al-Mu'jam al-Awsat" (6477) via Muhammad bin Hamzah al-Raqqi, from Ja'far bin Burqan.
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (5895), Muslim (2341) and Abu Dawud (4209) recorded it via Thabit al-Bunani.
Details of the narration: When Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked about dyeing, he said that if he had wished he could have counted the white hairs on his (peace and blessings be upon him) head; he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dye, though Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) used to dye with henna and katam (a plant).
Note / Clarification: In Ahmad's narration 19/ (12474) it says that at the time of his death there were 30 white hairs in his (peace and blessings be upon him) head and beard, while in other narrations the number is given as 19, 18, or 14 (Ibn Hibban: 6293).
Reference / Source: Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Nasa'i and Ibn Hibban recorded it via Qatadah from Anas.
Details of the narration: Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dye; the whiteness was only slight, in his (peace and blessings be upon him) 'anfaqah (the hair below the lower lip), his temples and his head. In the narration of Muhammad bin Sirin it says that he (peace and blessings be upon him) saw very little of old age (greyness).
Note / Clarification: In the narrations of Ahmad and Muslim there is the addition that Abu Bakr and 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to dye with henna and katam.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 19/ (11965, 12054) and Ibn Majah (3629) recorded it via Humayd bin Abi Humayd al-Tawil from Anas.
Details of the narration: In it the number is given as "about 17 or 20 white hairs", which were in the front part of the beard.
Reference / Source: Rabi'ah bin Abi 'Abd al-Rahman narrated from Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) (Ahmad, al-Bukhari, Muslim, al-Tirmidhi, Ibn Hibban) that there were not even 20 white hairs in his (peace and blessings be upon him) head and beard.
Note / Clarification: This narration does not mention dyeing.
Reference / Source: In Sahih Muslim (2341) it is narrated via Abu Iyas from Anas that when he was asked about the greyness of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "Allah did not blemish him with white hair" (i.e. he remained most handsome).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From Companions other than Anas there is evidence of dyeing.
Reference / Source: Ahmad 9/ (5338), al-Bukhari (1660) and Muslim (1187) narrated from 'Abdullah bin 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dye with yellow (sufrah).
Reference / Source: Ahmad 44/ (26535) and al-Bukhari recorded via 'Uthman bin 'Abdullah bin Mawhab that Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) brought out a blessed hair of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which was red from being dyed with henna and katam.
Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar al-'Asqalani said in "Fath al-Bari" 18/ 201 that its apparent meaning indicates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to dye.
Details of the narration: With the author (al-Hakim), the hadith of Abu Rimthah (may Allah be pleased with him) will come later (4248), with the words: "His (peace and blessings be upon him) hair had been touched by white, and that white was red from being dyed with henna."
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: From 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) too there is support for Anas's statement that he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dye.
Reference / Source: In "Muwatta' Imam Malik" 2/ 949-950 it is narrated that 'A'ishah ordered 'Abd al-Rahman bin al-Aswad to dye, and cited Abu Bakr as evidence, not the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Important point: Imam Malik bin Anas says that had the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dyed, 'A'ishah would certainly have mentioned him (peace and blessings be upon him) as evidence.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Isma'ili (as cited in "Fath al-Bari"), commenting on the narration of Umm Salamah, said that it does not state that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself dyed; rather, it is possible that after his death the hairs turned red from the effect of perfume and yellowness. If that is not the case, then Anas's narration that "he (peace and blessings be upon him) did not dye" is more authentic.
Important point: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar inclines to the view that the redness of the hair was actually due to the use of perfume (tib), as is stated explicitly in the narration of Rabi'ah bin Abi 'Abd al-Rahman, where Anas asserted this with certainty. The narration of Jabir bin Samurah also supports this.
General principle: Imam al-Tabari reconciled the narrations of negation and affirmation thus: those who affirmed it reported what they saw at a particular time, and those who negated it (such as Anas) described his (peace and blessings be upon him) usual and constant state.
General principle: Imam al-Tahawi and Ibn Kathir preferred the affirmation over Anas's negation.
Important point: According to Ibn Kathir the rule is that "affirmation takes precedence over negation", because the one who affirms has additional knowledge. The knowledge of Ibn 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) may be more complete than that of Anas because of his sister Hafsah (may Allah be pleased with her).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad bin Hanbal also rejected Anas's negation and argued from the hadith of Ibn 'Umar.
Important point: In the editors' view, the statement of Imam Malik bin Anas is the weightiest and most sound: had he (peace and blessings be upon him) dyed, 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) would certainly have mentioned it; Allah knows best.
