It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not laugh (heartily); rather, his laughter was only a smile. His shins were somewhat slender, and when you looked at him, you would say (because of the natural blackness and lustre of his eyes) that he had applied kohl to his eyes, although they had no kohl in them.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: Its chain is weak. Technical note / Defect ('illah): The narrator Hajjaj bin Artah has some weakness (lin); moreover he is a "mudallis" and here he narrates with "'an" ('an'anah, without explicitly stating that he heard it). Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3645) recorded it via Ahmad bin Mani' with this same chain and declared it "hasan gharib". Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it in "al-Musnad" 34/ (21004) via Surayj bin al-Nu'man from 'Abbad bin al-'Awwam. Important point: What is well known in the hadith of Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) is only the mention of little flesh on the heels, without mention of the shins, as in the preceding narrations that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was "manhus al-'aqib", and the narrator Simak bin Harb explained this as "having little flesh on the heel". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: His (peace and blessings be upon him) only smiling is supported by the narration of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) in Sahih al-Bukhari (4824) and Sahih Muslim (899): "I never saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughing so fully that I could see his uvula; he (peace and blessings be upon him) would only smile." Reference / Source: It is also supported by the hadith of 'Abdullah bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him), which al-Tirmidhi (3642) narrated and declared sahih. Grading: This supporting narration of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is narrated with a "hasan" chain. Important point: The statement "His eyes looked as if lined with kohl, though he had not applied kohl" means that the hair on the edges of his eyelids was so thick that it seemed as if kohl had been applied. This is supported by the narration of Ahmad 14/ (8352) that he (peace and blessings be upon him) was "ahdab ashfar al-'aynayn" (having long eyelashes).
