It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: When I greeted the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with salam, his blessed face was shining. Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was pleased, his blessed face would light up as if it were a piece of the moon, and this state of his would be recognised.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim); both of them recorded the long hadith, but they did not record these words.

Note / Clarification: The part between brackets in this chain has dropped out of the manuscripts, but it is present in al-Hakim's narration. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 9/33, 150 from al-Hakim with this addition. This is also supported by al-Bukhari's narration from Yahya bin Bukayr. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration of al-Zuhri is also authentically established via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Ka'b bin Malik from his father, as Ma'mar and others narrated from al-Zuhri, and Yunus bin Yazid al-Ayli and others agreed with 'Uqayl bin Khalid in his narration.
