Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4236

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qays bin Makhramah (may Allah be pleased with him) that, while mentioning the birth of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), he said that his (peace and blessings be upon him) father passed away while his mother was pregnant with him.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The reason is the weakness of Sadaqah bin Sabiq (known as al-Muq'ad or al-Zamin). Imam Yahya bin Ma'in said about him: "He is nothing" (i.e. unreliable), as Ibn Shahin reported in "Tarikh al-Du'afa' wa al-Kadhdhabin".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The other students of Muhammad bin Ishaq differed over narrating this report as connected; they narrated it from Ibn Ishaq as maqtu' or mursal. In the narration of Yunus bin Bukayr, Ibn Ishaq even stated it with doubt: "His (peace and blessings be upon him) father 'Abdullah died while his mother was pregnant, and it is also said that he died when he (peace and blessings be upon him) was 28 months old; Allah knows best which of these it was."
Important point: This doubt of Ibn Ishaq shows that no connected chain for it was established in his view; otherwise he would not have doubted.
Reference / Source: This narration is found in Ibn Hisham's "al-Sirah al-Nabawiyyah" 1/157 via Ziyad al-Bakka'i, in "al-Mubtada' wa al-Maghazi" in the transmission of Yunus bin Bukayr (28, 53), in al-Tabari's "Tarikh" 2/165 via Salamah bin al-Fadl, and in Ibn 'Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" 3/81 via Ibrahim bin Sa'd.
Note / Clarification: All four of these narrators (al-Bakka'i, Yunus, Ibrahim and Salamah) transmitted it from Ibn Ishaq only as maqtu' or mursal.
Details of the narration: This statement of Ibn Ishaq, that his (peace and blessings be upon him) father died while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was still in his mother's womb, was also narrated by Muhammad bin 'Umar al-Waqidi from a group of his teachers, in Ibn Sa'd (1/79, 128-129). Al-Waqidi and his scribe Ibn Sa'd both preferred this view.
Reference / Source: This is also the view of Imam Ibn Shihab al-Zuhri, as 'Abd al-Razzaq (9718) and al-Bayhaqi in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" 1/88, 187 narrated from him.
Reference / Source: This is likewise the view of Dawud bin Abi Hind, as Abu Nu'aym recorded in "Dala'il al-Nubuwwah" (80).
Important point: Ibn al-Athir preferred this view in "Usd al-Ghabah" 1/20, and Ibn Nasir al-Din declared it correct in "Jami' al-Athar" 2/429, saying that this is the correct view according to the majority of the biographers (ahl al-siyar).
Details of the narration: Others differed from them: Ibn Sa'd (1/80) reported from Hisham al-Kalbi from his father, and from 'Awanah bin al-Hakam, that the death occurred 28 months, or 7 months, after his (peace and blessings be upon him) birth. Al-Zubayr bin Bakkar, and via his route Ibn Abi Khaythamah and Ibn 'Asakir (3/78), reported from Ma'ruf bin Kharrabudh that the death occurred when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was two months old.
Important point: Imam al-Suhayli said in "al-Rawd al-Unuf" 1/184 that according to most scholars the death occurred while he (peace and blessings be upon him) was in the cradle (in infancy), as al-Dulabi and others mentioned.
Note / Clarification: The editors say that the correct position is that according to most scholars he (peace and blessings be upon him) was still in his mother's womb at that time, and whoever asserted otherwise perhaps was not aware of the statements of the majority; Allah knows best.
