حدثني بكر بن محمد الصَّيْرَفي بمَرْو، حدثنا أبو الأحوص محمد بن الهيثم القاضي، حدثنا عُبيد بن إسحاق العَطّار، حدثنا القاسم بن محمد بن عبد الله بن محمد بن عَقِيل، حدثني أبي، حدثني أبي، عن جابر بن عبد الله، قال: صَعِدَ رسولُ الله ﷺ المِنبرَ فحَمِدَ الله وأثنى عليه، ثم قال: "مَن أنا؟ قلنا: رسولُ الله، قال: "نعم، ولكن مَن أنا؟ " قلنا: أنتَ محمدُ بن عبد الله بن عبد المُطَّلب بن هاشم بن عبد مَناف، قال: "أنا سَيِّدُ ولدِ آدمَ ولا فَخْرَ" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) ascended the pulpit, then praised and extolled Allah and said: "Who am I?" We said: The Messenger of Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes, but who am I?" We said: You are Muhammad bin Abdullah bin Abd al-Muttalib bin Hashim bin Abd Manaf. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am the leader of the children of Adam, and (I do not say this out of) pride."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده ضعيف جدًّا، القاسم بن محمد متروك تالف، وعُبيد بن إسحاق ضعفه غير واحدٍ، قال ذلك الذهبي في "تلخيصه". قلنا: وعبد الله بن محمد بن عقيل ضعيف فيما يتفرد به.
Grading: Its chain is very weak (da'if jiddan).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator al-Qasim bin Muhammad is "matruk" (abandoned) and utterly unreliable (talif), while 'Ubayd bin Ishaq al-'Attar was also declared weak by several imams, as al-Dhahabi mentioned in his "Talkhis".
Note / Clarification: Moreover, 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil is also considered weak in the narrations he transmits alone.
وأخرجه أبو بكر بن أبي خيثمة في "تاريخه" كما في "جامع الآثار" لابن ناصر الدين الدمشقي 4/ 430، وأبو جعفر بن البَخْتَري في بعض مجالسِهِ إملاءً كما في "مجموع فيه مصنفاته" (141)، والطبراني في "الأوسط" (582) من طريق عُبيد بن إسحاق، عن القاسم بن محمد، عن جده عبد الله بن محمد بن عَقيل، عن جابر. لم يذكروا فيه أبا القاسم بن محمد.
Reference / Source: This narration was recorded by Abu Bakr Ibn Abi Khaythamah in his "Tarikh" (as found in Ibn Nasir al-Din's "Jami' al-Athar" 4/430), by Abu Ja'far Ibn al-Bakhtari in some of his dictation sessions (141), and by al-Tabarani in "al-Awsat" (582), via the route of 'Ubayd bin Ishaq, from al-Qasim bin Muhammad, from his grandfather 'Abdullah bin Muhammad bin 'Aqil, from Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him).
