(1). It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque and seized the opportunity of his being alone. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: "O Abu Dharr! Indeed, the mosque has a greeting (tahiyyah)." I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is its greeting? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Two rak'ahs." So I prayed those two rak'ahs, then I turned to him and said: O Messenger of Allah! You have commanded me to pray, so what is the reality of prayer? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prayer is the best of things ordained; so whoever wishes may do less of it and whoever wishes may do more (through voluntary prayers)." I said: O Messenger of Allah! Which deed is most beloved to Allah? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Faith in Allah." Then he mentioned the rest of the hadith, until I said: O Messenger of Allah! What is the total number of the prophets? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "One hundred and twenty-four thousand prophets." I said: How many of them are messengers? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Three hundred and thirteen." And he mentioned the rest of the hadith.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is weak because of the weakness of Yahya bin Sa'id al-Sa'di. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Dhahabi said about him in "al-Talkhis": "He is not thiqah." Ibn 'Adi, and al-Dhahabi in "Tarikh al-Islam" 5/478, declared this hadith of his munkar. Al-'Uqayli said he is not corroborated in it, and Ibn Hibban said it is not permissible to use him as proof when he is alone in a narration. (3076). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Something similar has been narrated from Abu Dharr through other routes that are of no value at all, and from the hadith of Abu Umamah, which is also of no value. Important point: However, it is authentically established from Abu Umamah concerning the number of the messengers that they were three hundred and fifteen (315), as has passed with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (3076). Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (131) and (4592) from Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain. Reference / Source: It was recorded by Ibn Hibban in "al-Majruhin" 3/129, Ibn 'Adi in "al-Kamil" 7/244, al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa-l-Sifat" (861) and in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" 9/4, al-Shajari in "al-Amali al-Khamisiyyah" 1/204-205, and Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" 23/277, via various routes from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Sa'di, with this chain. Reference / Source: A similar narration was recorded by Ahmad 35/(21546) and (21552) via 'Ubayd bin al-Khashkhash; Ibn Hibban (361) via Abu Idris al-Khawlani; al-Tabarani in "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (1979) via 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'A'idh al-Azdi; and Ishaq bin Rahawayh (as in "al-Matalib al-'Aliyah" (646/1)), al-Harith bin Abi Usamah (as in "Bughyat al-Bahith" (53) and (1064)) and Abu Ya'la in "al-Kabir" (as in "al-Matalib" (3/646)) via 'Awf bin Malik; all four of them from Abu Dharr al-Ghifari. Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, 'Awf bin Malik said in his narration that the number of the messengers was three hundred and fifteen. All of its chains are weak and cannot be relied upon. The best of them is the route of 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'A'idh, but the narrator from him is "majhul" (unknown); and likewise the route of 'Awf bin Malik, but the narrator from him is unnamed ("mubham").
