It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him); he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Satan surely gives every child of Adam that prod (at birth), and that is why the newborn child cries out screaming, except for Maryam bint Imran and her son (Isa, peace be upon him)." For when Maryam's mother gave birth to her, she said: "And I seek refuge for her and her offspring with You from Satan, the accursed" [Surah Al Imran: 36]. So a screen was placed before her, and Satan prodded that screen. "So her Lord accepted her with a good acceptance and made her grow in the best manner" [Surah Al Imran: 37]. Her mother passed away, and she was placed in the care of her maternal aunt, the mother of Yahya (peace be upon him).

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is not in the manuscripts, but it is necessary for several reasons: Technical note / Defect ('illah): First: Isma'il bin Ja'far did not meet Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt; he usually narrates from him through Yazid bin Khusayfah. Second: no narration of Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt from his father is known, whereas 'Abdullah bin Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt does narrate from his father Yazid. Third: Muhammad bin Ishaq narrated this hadith from Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt, from Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), so the one who narrates this hadith from Abu Hurayrah is Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt directly, and he has narrations from him. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Perhaps the name got inverted for some narrators, from "'Abdullah bin Yazid bin Qusayt" to "Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt." It is known that Yazid is often attributed to his grandfather Qusayt and called "Yazid bin Qusayt." And Allah knows best.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, Technical note / Defect ('illah): while the part from "fa-inna Maryam" to the end of the report is the saying of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him), inserted ("mudraj") and mawquf on him, as will be explained. This chain is "hasan" on account of 'Abdullah bin Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt, from whom a group narrated, and whom Ibn Hibban mentioned in "al-Thiqat". Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Yasar, the author of "al-Maghazi," corroborated him (without mentioning the death of Maryam's mother and her aunt taking her into her care). This hadith has other routes from Abu Hurayrah as well. Reference / Source: It was recorded by al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 3/238-239 via various routes from Muhammad bin Ishaq, from Yazid bin 'Abdullah bin Qusayt, from Abu Hurayrah. It was also recorded by Ahmad 12/(7182) and 13/(7708), al-Bukhari (3431) and (4548), Muslim (2366) and Ibn Hibban (6235) via Sa'id bin al-Musayyab; by Ahmad 13/(7879), (7915) and 14/(8254) via 'Ajlan (the freed slave of al-Mushma'ill); by al-Bukhari (3286) via al-A'raj; and by Muslim (2366) via Abu Yunus (the freed slave of Abu Hurayrah) and via Abu Salih al-Samman; all five of them from Abu Hurayrah. In the narration of Sa'id bin al-Musayyab, after the words "Maryam and her son," there comes: "Then Abu Hurayrah would say: Recite if you wish: ﴿وَإِنِّي أُعِيذُهَا بِكَ وَذُرِّيَّتَهَا مِنَ الشَّيْطَانِ الرَّجِيمِ﴾ [And I seek refuge for her and her offspring with You from Satan, the accursed]." Important point: Al-Khatib al-Baghdadi mentioned in "al-Fasl li-l-Wasl" 1/173 and Ibn Hajar in "al-Fath" 10/213 that the recitation of this verse is mawquf on Abu Hurayrah (i.e. it is not the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)). Sa'id did not mention in his narration what comes after this verse. Details of the narration: 'Ajlan and Abu Yunus also did not mention in their narrations what comes after the words "Maryam and her son." Details of the narration: The wording of al-A'raj is: "except 'Isa bin Maryam; (Satan) went to prick him, but pricked the covering (membrane) instead." Details of the narration: The wording of Abu Salih is: "The cry of the newborn when it is born is from a prick of Satan," and he made no exception.
