Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Muhammad bin Ja'far narrated it from Shu'bah without mentioning "'Abdullah" (Ibn Mas'ud) in it. But 'Ali bin Nasr (the father of Nasr bin 'Ali) is "thiqah", and Imam Ahmad ranked him above Abu Mu'awiyah. So 'Ali bin Nasr's connecting (wasl) of this report by mentioning Ibn Mas'ud is an "addition by a trustworthy narrator" (ziyadat al-thiqah), which is accepted. Abu Ishaq is "'Amr bin 'Abdullah al-Sabi'i".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah 11/ 551 and al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" 26/ 26 narrated it by way of Muhammad bin Ja'far, from Shu'bah, from Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i, from 'Amr bin Maymun, "mursal".
