Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4086

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "Sayyidah Sarah (peace be upon her) was ninety years old and Sayyiduna Ibrahim (peace be upon him) was one hundred and twenty years old. So when the fear left Ibrahim, and the glad tidings of Ishaq (peace be upon him) came to him, and he felt safe from those (angels) whom he had feared, he said: 'All praise is for Allah, who has granted me in old age Isma'il and Ishaq. Indeed, my Lord is the Hearer of supplication.' [Surah Ibrahim: 39] Then Jibril (peace be upon him) came to Sarah (peace be upon her) with the glad tidings and said: 'Receive the glad tidings of a child named Ishaq, and after Ishaq, of Ya'qub.' Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: So she struck her forehead in astonishment, and that is the saying of Allah Almighty: 'And she struck her face' [Surah al-Dhariyat: 29], and she said: 'Shall I give birth while I am an old woman and this husband of mine is an old man? Indeed, this is an amazing thing.' They said: 'Are you amazed at the decree of Allah? The mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you, O people of the house. Indeed, He is Praiseworthy, Glorious.' [Surah Hud: 72-73]."
Imam Bukhari used Ikrimah as evidence and Imam Muslim used al-Suddi as evidence, and the chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Status of the narrators: There is no harm in its narrators.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there is a disagreement from 'Amr bin Hammad over naming the Successor (tabi'i). Ahmad bin Nasr (al-Labbad, i.e. Ahmad bin Muhammad Nasr) named "'Ikrimah", while Musa bin Harun al-Tusi contradicted him and named "Abu Salih Badham" (the freed slave of Umm Hani'). This (Musa's narration) is stronger and more firmly established than al-Labbad's narration. Although Abu Salih is "da'if al-hadith" (weak in hadith), he is not alone in narrating it, as will come. (The narrator) al-Suddi is Isma'il bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Karimah.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tarikh" 1/ 271 from Musa bin Harun, from 'Amr bin Hammad, from Asbat, from al-Suddi. Al-Suddi related this report from Abu Malik, from Abu Salih (who narrates from Ibn 'Abbas), from Murrah al-Hamdani (from 'Abdullah, i.e. Ibn Mas'ud), and from some of the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), that: "Jibril said to Sarah …".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In this narration there is no mention of the ages of Ibrahim and Sarah when they were given the glad tidings of Ishaq. And this portion is "hasan al-isnad" (with a good chain) through the narration of al-Suddi (from Murrah and from some of the Companions).
Analysis: What appears is that the mention here of the ages of Ibrahim and Sarah was taken from the "People of the Book", as indicated by the narration of Muhammad bin Ishaq in Ibn Abi Hatim's "Tafsir" (6/ 2056). He said: "It was mentioned to me from some of those who read the Book that Sarah was ninety years old", and then he said about Ibrahim: "and he was one hundred and twenty years old."
