أخبرني أبو سعيد الأحمسي بالكوفة، حدثنا الحسين بن حميد بن الربيع، حدثنا الحسين بن علي السُّلَمي، حدثنا محمد بن حسان، حدثنا محمد بن جعفر، عن أبيه، عن جده، عن علي، قال: جَمَع ربُّنا ﷿ لِنوح علم الماضين كلِّهم، وأيّده بروح منه، فدعا قومه سرًا وعلانية تسع مئة (1) وخمسين سنة، كلَّما مضى قَرْنٌ أَتبَعَه قرنٌ، فزادهم كُفرًا وطغيانًا (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Our Lord gathered for Nuh (peace be upon him) the knowledge of all those who had passed before him, and supported him with a spirit from Himself. So he called his people secretly and openly for nine hundred and fifty years. Whenever one generation passed, another generation followed it, and their disbelief and rebellion only increased."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

(1) في (ز) و (ص) و (ع): مئة، بدل: تسع مئة. وهذا خطأ صريح، مخالف لنص الآية، والتصويب من (ب).
Note / Clarification: In manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A) it reads "a hundred" instead of "nine hundred", which is a clear "mistake" contrary to the text of the verse. The correction is from (B).
(2) إسناده ضعيف بمرَّةٍ لجهالة الحسين بن علي السلمي ومحمد بن حسان: وهو السُّلمي، لأنَّ الحسين صرّح في بعض طرقه بأنه عمه، ومحمد بن جعفر - وهو ابن محمد بن علي بن الحسين بن علي بن أبي طالب - تُكلِّم فيه كما قال الذهبي في "الميزان"، ومحمد بن علي روايته عن جده علي بن أبي طالب مرسلة كما قال أبو زرعة الرازي وغيره، والحسين بن حميد ليس بالمتين.
Grading: Its chain is "extremely weak" because of the unknown status of al-Husayn bin 'Ali al-Sulami and Muhammad bin Hassan (al-Sulami), since al-Husayn stated explicitly in some of its routes that he is his paternal uncle. Muhammad bin Ja'far (Ibn Muhammad bin 'Ali bin al-Husayn bin 'Ali bin Abi Talib) has been criticised, as al-Dhahabi said in "al-Mizan". Muhammad bin 'Ali's narration from his grandfather 'Ali bin Abi Talib is "mursal", as Abu Zur'ah al-Razi and others said. And al-Husayn bin Humayd is not solid (in hadith).
