حدَّثنا أبو بكر بن إسحاق، أخبرنا إسماعيل بن قُتيبة، حدَّثنا يحيى بن يحيى، أخبرنا ابن أبي زائدة، عن داود بن أبي هند، عن عِكْرمة، عن ابن عبَّاس قال: قالت قريشٌ لليهود: أعطُونا شيئًا نَسألَ عنه هذا الرجلَ، فقالوا: سَلُوه عن الرُّوح، فنزلت ﴿وَيَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الرُّوحِ قُلِ الرُّوحُ مِنْ أَمْرِ رَبِّي وَمَا أُوتِيتُمْ مِنَ الْعِلْمِ إِلَّا قَلِيلًا﴾ [الإسراء: 85]، قالوا: نحن لم نُؤْتَ من العلم إلا قليلًا، وقد أُوتينا التوراةَ فيها حكمُ الله، ومن أُوتِيَ التوراةَ فقد أوتيَ خيرًا كثيرًا، قال: فنَزَلت: ﴿قُلْ لَوْ كَانَ الْبَحْرُ مِدَادًا لِكَلِمَاتِ رَبِّي لَنَفِدَ الْبَحْرُ قَبْلَ أَنْ تَنْفَدَ كَلِمَاتُ رَبِّي وَلَوْ جِئْنَا بِمِثْلِهِ مَدَدًا﴾ [الكهف:109] (3).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that he said: "Quraysh said to the Jews: 'Give us something to ask this man (the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) about.' They said: 'Ask him about the soul (ruh).' So this verse was revealed: 'And they ask you about the soul. Say: The soul is of the command of my Lord, and you have not been given of knowledge except a little' [Surah al-Isra: 85]. The Jews (on hearing this) said: 'We are not such as have been given only a little knowledge; we have been given the Torah, in which is the ruling of Allah, and whoever has been given the Torah has been given a great deal of good.' At this, this verse was revealed: 'Say: If the sea were ink for the words of my Lord, the sea would be exhausted before the words of my Lord were exhausted, even if We brought the like of it as a supplement' [Surah al-Kahf: 109]."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(3) إسناده صحيح. يحيى بن يحيى: هو النيسابوري، وابن أبي زائدة: هو يحيى بن زكريا بن أبي زائدة.
Grading: Its chain is sahih. Yahya bin Yahya is al-Naysaburi, and Ibn Abi Za'idah is Yahya bin Zakariyya bin Abi Za'idah.
وأخرجه أحمد 4/ (2309)، والترمذي (3140)، والنسائي (11252)، وابن حبان (99) من طريقين عن ابن أبي زائدة، بهذا الإسناد. وقال الترمذي: حديث حسن صحيح.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (4/2309), al-Tirmidhi (3140), al-Nasa'i (11252) and Ibn Hibban (99) recorded it via two routes from Ibn Abi Za'idah, with this chain. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is hasan sahih.
