Malik bin Marthad (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father that he said: I asked Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him): Did you hear the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) mention the Night of Decree (Laylat al-Qadr)? He said: "Yes!" I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me about the Night of Decree: is it in Ramadan or outside Ramadan? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Rather, it is in Ramadan." I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me, was it with the prophets, so that when the prophets passed away it was taken up, or will it remain until the Day of Resurrection? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "No, rather it will remain until the Day of Resurrection." I said: O Messenger of Allah, tell me in which part of Ramadan it is. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the last ten; do not ask me about anything after this." I said: O Messenger of Allah, by the right I have upon you, I adjure you: in which part of the (last) ten is it? The narrator says: At this he (peace and blessings be upon him) became so severely angry with me that he had never been so angry with me before or after, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If Allah had willed, He would have informed you of it. Seek it in the last seven nights, and do not ask me about anything after this."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.
