Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 4

Zayd bin Aslam narrates from his father that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went out to the mosque one day and found Sayyiduna Mu'adh bin Jabal (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting and weeping beside the blessed grave of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He asked: O Mu'adh, what has made you weep? He replied: What has made me weep is a hadith I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him); he (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Even a little showing off is shirk, and whoever shows enmity to the friends (awliya') of Allah has openly declared war on Allah. Indeed, Allah loves the righteous, the God-fearing and the hidden ones, who, if they are absent, are not missed, and if they are present, are not recognised. Their hearts are lamps of guidance; they come out safe from every dusty, dark trial."
This is a hadith that has not been recorded in the "Two Sahihs", although both of them used the narration of Zayd bin Aslam from his father from the Companions as evidence, and both of them agreed on using as evidence the narration of al-Layth bin Sa'd from Ayyash bin Abbas al-Qitbani. This is a sahih Egyptian chain in which no hidden defect ('illah) is known.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan", in sha' Allah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The outward appearance of this chain seems "sahih", but it contains a "hidden defect" which Imam al-Hakim did not notice here. The detail is that in this chain al-Layth bin Sa'd was contradicted by Nafi' bin Yazid al-Kala'i (who is thiqah); he narrated it from 'Ayyash bin 'Abbas al-Qitbani, from 'Isa bin Abd al-Rahman (who is Ibn Farwah al-Zuraqi), from Zayd bin Aslam. Thus he inserted the intermediary "'Isa bin Abd al-Rahman al-Zuraqi" between 'Ayyash and Zayd, and he ('Isa) is a narrator who is matruk al-hadith (abandoned in hadith).
Reference / Source: The author (al-Hakim) mentions this narration by this route later at number (8131); it was also narrated by Ibn Abi al-Dunya in "al-Awliya'" (6) and "al-Tawadu' wa al-Khumul" (8), al-Tahawi in "Sharh Mushkil al-Athar" (1798), al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 20/ (321), Tammam al-Razi in "al-Fawa'id" (1673), Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" 1/ 5, and al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (6393).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This narration was also reported from 'Isa bin Abd al-Rahman by "Abd Allah bin Lahi'ah", as recorded by Ibn Majah (3989) by way of Harmalah bin Yahya, from Abd Allah bin Wahb, from Ibn Lahi'ah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is among the good (jayyid) narrations of Ibn Lahi'ah, because Ibn Wahb heard from him early on (before his books were burned and his memory deteriorated).
Important point: This indicates that this hadith is "mahfuz" (preserved) through the route of 'Isa bin Abd al-Rahman from Zayd bin Aslam, and Allah knows best.
Details of the narration: As for the hadith of al-Layth bin Sa'd, it was narrated by al-Tahawi in "Sharh al-Mushkil" (1799) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (1046) by way of al-Rabi' bin Sulayman al-Muradi, and by al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" 20/ (322) by way of Abd Allah bin Salih; and both of them (al-Rabi' and Abd Allah) narrate it from al-Layth.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani narrated it in "al-Awsat" (4950) and "al-Kabir" 20/ (53), al-Quda'i in "Musnad al-Shihab" (1298), and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Zuhd" (195), by way of Shadh bin Fayyad, from Abu Qahdham al-Nadr bin Ma'bad, from Abu Qilabah, from Ibn 'Umar, who said: 'Umar passed by Mu'adh bin Jabal while he was weeping — (and then he mentioned the whole hadith).
Grading: This chain is extremely "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Regarding Abu Qahdham, Ibn Ma'in said: "laysa bi-shay'" (he is nothing), and al-Nasa'i said: "laysa bi-thiqah" (he is not trustworthy). Also, it has been said that Abu Qilabah (who is Abd Allah bin Zayd al-Jarmi) did not hear from Ibn 'Umar. This narration will also come later with the author at number (5263) by this same route.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani also narrated it in "al-Awsat" (7112) and "al-Saghir" (892) through the chain: Muhammad bin Nuh bin Harb, from Ya'qub bin Ishaq al-Razi, from Ishaq bin Sulayman al-Razi, from his brother Talhah bin Sulayman, from Fayyad bin Ghazwan, from Zubayd al-Yami, from Mujahid, from Ibn 'Umar.
Grading: This chain is "da'if" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): No biography could be found for Muhammad bin Nuh (the shaykh of al-Tabarani); Ya'qub bin Ishaq and Talhah bin Sulayman are "majhul al-hal" (of unknown condition) (their entries are in "al-Jarh wa al-Ta'dil" 9/ 204 and 4/ 483-484). As for Fayyad bin Ghazwan, Imam al-Bukhari considered him slightly soft (talyin), as al-Dhahabi quoted in "al-Mizan", whereas Imam Ahmad called him "thiqah" and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" 7/ 326.
Reference / Source: And al-Ajurri narrated in "al-Ghuraba'" (38) by way of Muhammad bin Isma'il bin Abi Fudayk, from Yahya bin Abd Allah bin Abi Qatadah, from Nafi' bin Malik, who said: 'Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque and found Mu'adh bin Jabal sitting by the house of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), weeping. 'Umar said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman! What makes you weep? Has a brother of yours died? (asking about one of his companions). Mu'adh said: No, but it is a hadith which my beloved (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated to me in this very mosque. 'Umar asked: What is it, O Abu Abd al-Rahman? Mu'adh said: He (peace and blessings be upon him) informed me: "Allah the Exalted loves those who are hidden, God-fearing and pure, who, if they are absent, are not searched for, and if they are present, are not recognised; their hearts are lamps of guidance, and they come out (safely) from every blind and dark trial."
Technical note / Defect ('illah): A group narrated from Ibn Abi Qatadah, and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat". Nafi' bin Malik (who is Ibn Abi 'Amir al-Asbahi, the paternal uncle of Imam Malik bin Anas) is thiqah, but he did not live in the time of 'Umar bin al-Khattab, so his narration is "mursal".
Grading: The chain up to him (Nafi') is "hasan". Thus this route and the one before it are sufficient for "i'tibar" (consideration as support) and for raising the hadith to hasan grade, in sha' Allah.
Note / Clarification: Other hadiths have also been narrated about showing off (riya') being shirk, which the author will discuss later at numbers (8136-8139).
Reference / Source: It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Allah the Exalted says: Whoever shows enmity to a friend (wali) of Mine, I declare war against him." It was recorded by al-Bukhari (6502).
Note / Clarification: "Adhantuhu" means: I have notified him and informed him.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Rather, it has a "defect", as we explained in the previous note. Moreover, the two Shaykhs (al-Bukhari and Muslim) did not rely on the hadith of al-Layth from 'Ayyash bin 'Abbas; indeed Imam al-Bukhari did not narrate anything at all from 'Ayyash bin 'Abbas in his "Sahih".
