أخبرنا أبو عبد الله محمد بن عبد الله الصَّفّار، حدثنا أبو بكر بن أبي الدُّنيا، حدثني محمد بن إسحاق بن حمزة البُخَاري، حدثني أَبي، حدثنا عبد الله بن المبارَك، أخبرنا محمد بن مُطرِّف، عن أبي حازم، أظنُّه عن سَهْل بن سعد: أنَّ فتًى من الأنصار دَخَلَته خَشْيةٌ من النار، فكان يبكي عند ذِكْر النار حتى حَبَسَه ذلك في البيت، فذُكِرَ ذلك للنبيِّ ﷺ فجاءَه في البيت، فلما دخل عليه اعتَنَقَه الفتى وخَرَّ ميِّتًا، فقال النبي ﷺ: "جَهِّزوا صاحبَكم، فإِنَّ الفَرَقَ فَلَذَ كَبِدَه" (2).
هذا حديث صحيح الإسناد، ولم يُخرجاه.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that a young man of the Ansar had (in his heart) an intense fear of Hell. Whenever Hell was mentioned he would weep so much that because of it he became confined to his house. When this was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) went to his house. When he (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon him, the young man clung to him (peace and blessings be upon him) and (in that very state) collapsed and died. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Prepare your companion for burial, for fear has torn his liver to pieces."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(2) إسناده ضعيف لجهالة محمد بن إسحاق بن حمزة، وأما أبوه فمعروف، روى عنه جماعة وذكره ابن حبان في "الثقات"، ووثقه أبو يعلى الخليلي في "الإرشاد" 3/ 966، ونقل فيه أيضًا 3/ 968 عن الإمام محمد بن إسماعيل البخاري أنه أثنى عليه، وليس كما قال الذهبي في "تلخيصه": هذا البخاري وأبوه لا يدرى من هما والخبر شبه موضوع.
Grading: Its chain is "weak" because of the jahalah (being unknown) of Muhammad bin Ishaq bin Hamzah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): His father, however, is known: a group narrated from him, Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat", Abu Ya'la al-Khalili declared him trustworthy in "al-Irshad" (3/966), and in the same place (3/968) he reported from Imam al-Bukhari that he praised him. The matter is not as al-Dhahabi said in his "al-Talkhis": "This Bukhari and his father, it is not known who they are, and the report resembles a fabrication".
وأخرجه البيهقي في "شعب الإيمان" (908) عن أبي عبد الله الحاكم، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (908) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
وهو في كتاب "الخوف" لابن أبي الدنيا فيما قاله الحافظ ابن حجر في "لسان الميزان" 2/ 54. والمحفوظ في هذا الخبر ما رواه نعيم بن حماد في "الزهد" لابن المبارك (320) عن ابن المبارك، عن محمد بن مطرف، عن الثقة: أنَّ فتًى من الأنصار … فذكره بإبهام راويه وإرساله.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The "mahfuz" (preserved) version of this report is what Nu'aym bin Hammad narrated in Ibn al-Mubarak's "al-Zuhd" (320) from Ibn al-Mubarak, from Muhammad bin Mutarrif, from a trustworthy narrator: "A young man of the Ansar …", then he mentioned it with its narrator left unnamed (ibham) and as mursal (irsal).
وأخرجه كذلك أحمد في "الزهد" (2349) عن حسين بن محمد المرُّوذي، عن فضيل بن سليمان، عن محمد بن مطرف قال: حدثني الثقة: أن شابًا من الأنصار … فذكره.
Reference / Source: Ahmad likewise recorded it in "al-Zuhd" (2349) from Husayn bin Muhammad al-Marrudhi, from Fudayl bin Sulayman, from Muhammad bin Mutarrif, who said: A trustworthy narrator told me that a young man of the Ansar …, then he mentioned it.
فالخبر ضعيف فقط وليس بالموضوع أو شبه الموضوع كما قال الذهبي، والله تعالى أعلم.
Grading: So this report is only "weak"; it is not "mawdu'" (fabricated) or "close to mawdu'", as al-Dhahabi said. And Allah the Exalted knows best.
