Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3820

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to say: Allah benefits us through the Bedouins and their questions. One day a Bedouin came and said: O Messenger of Allah, Allah has mentioned in the Qur'an a harmful tree, and I did not think that there would be a tree in Paradise that would harm its owner. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which tree is that?" He said: The lote tree, because it has thorns. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "(Allah has said:) 'Among thornless lote trees' [Surah al-Waqi'ah: 28]. Allah will remove its thorns and put fruit in place of its thorns. It will be such a lote tree that a single fruit of it will split into seventy-two (72) kinds of food, no colour of which will resemble another."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: The words "ذكر اللهُ" are not in manuscripts (Z), (S) and ('A); we established them from manuscript (B) and al-Bayhaqi's "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (276), where he narrated it with the author's (al-Hakim's) chain and text.

Grading: It is "sahih li-ghayrihi". The narrators of this chain are thiqah, but it is defective (mu'all) due to "irsal".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): For Imam 'Abd Allah bin al-Mubarak, thiqah and a proof (hujjah), narrated it in his book "al-Zuhd" (263) in the recension of Nu'aym bin Hammad (from Safwan bin 'Amr, from Sulaym bin 'Amir) and said: "The Companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to..." and in it he dropped the link of Abu Umamah Sudayy bin 'Ajlan al-Bahili (i.e. he narrated it as mursal).
Reference / Source: As for the connected (muttasil) route, al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (276) by way of Abu 'Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Likewise, Abu Nu'aym narrated it in "Tarikh Asbahan" (2/ 351) by way of al-Waqidi, from Muhammad bin Harb, from Safwan bin 'Amr.
Grading: According to the hadith scholars, al-Waqidi is "matruk al-riwayah" (abandoned in narration).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: This hadith has a shahid narrated with a "sahih" chain from 'Utbah bin 'Abd al-Sulami, in Ibn Abi Dawud's "al-Ba'th" (70), al-Tabarani's "Musnad al-Shamiyyin" (492) and "al-Kabir" (17/ 318), and Abu Nu'aym's "al-Hilyah" (6/ 103): "I was sitting with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) when a Bedouin came...", but it mentions the acacia (talh) in place of the lote tree (sidr) and does not mention the verse.
Note / Clarification: "Khadada shawkahu" means: its thorns were cut off.
