Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3813

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "Every day He is in a (new) matter" [Surah al-Rahman: 29], that he said: "Allah Almighty has created a Preserved Tablet (al-Lawh al-Mahfuz) from a white pearl, its two covers are of red ruby, its pen is light and its writing is also light. Allah Almighty looks into it three hundred and sixty times every day, and with each look He creates, provides sustenance, gives life, causes death, grants honour, humiliates, and does whatever He wills. So this is the saying of Allah: 'Every day He is in a (new) matter.'"
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: In our manuscripts this word occurs thus (unclear) here and later at hadith number (3961), and no sense can be made of it. In al-Khuttali's "al-Dibaj" (8) and Ibn Battah's "al-Ibanah" (7/ 122) the wording is "qalamuhu barq" (its pen is lightning), and in the other sources of the takhrij the wording is "qalamuhu nur" (its pen is light).

Grading: This chain is "very da'if".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): There is agreement on the weakness of Abu Hamzah al-Thumali (Thabit bin Abi Safiyyah), and al-Dhahabi declared him very weak in the "Talkhis". Sufyan is Ibn 'Uyaynah.
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" (2/ 263-264) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (828) by way of Sufyan bin 'Uyaynah with this same chain. It will also come later by way of Sufyan at number (3961).
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari in his "Tafsir" (27/ 135), Abu al-Shaykh in "al-'Azamah" (158), al-Lalaka'i in "Usul al-I'tiqad" (1225) and al-Bayhaqi in "al-Asma' wa al-Sifat" (1004) narrated it through various routes from Abu Hamzah al-Thumali.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani in "al-Kabir" (10605), and by way of him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (1/ 325) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (10/ 62-63), narrated it by way of 'Abd Allah bin al-Walid al-'Ijli, from Bukayr bin Shihab, from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Two narrators narrated from Bukayr bin Shihab; Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat" and Abu Hatim called him "shaykh". We say: he is not that well known, and he narrated munkar reports from Sa'id bin Jubayr.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabarani (12511), and by way of him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (4/ 305), narrated it as marfu' by way of Ibrahim bin Yusuf, from Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah, from Layth, from 'Abd al-Malik bin Sa'id bin Jubayr, from his father, from Ibn 'Abbas, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Grading: This chain is "layyin" (weak).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Layth (Ibn Abi Sulaym) has a poor memory, and Ziyad bin 'Abd Allah (al-Bakka'i) is weak (layyin) in narrations other than those from Muhammad bin Ishaq, the author of the Sirah. Moreover, this report is not narrated as marfu' except through this chain, so it is "munkar".
Reference / Source: 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated it similarly in his "Tafsir" (1/ 389) by way of Ibn Jurayj, from 'Ata', from Ibn 'Abbas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Jurayj is a "mudallis" and did not explicitly state that he heard it.
Reference / Source: Abu al-Shaykh narrated it in "al-'Azamah" (241) by way of 'Abd al-Mun'im bin Idris bin Sinan, from his father, from Wahb bin Munabbih, from Ibn 'Abbas.
Grading: This chain is "talif" (ruined); 'Abd al-Mun'im is accused of lying and his father is matruk.
