أخبرنا جعفر بن محمد الخُلْدي، حَدَّثَنَا محمد بن علي بن زيد الصائغُ، حَدَّثَنَا سعيد بن منصور، حَدَّثَنَا عبد العزيز بن محمَّد، حَدَّثَنَا العلاء بن عبد الرحمن، عن أبيه، عن أبي هريرة قال: لما نَزَلَت ﴿وَإِن تَتَوَلَّوْا يَسْتَبْدِلْ قَوْمًا غَيْرَكُمْ﴾ [محمد: 38]، قالوا: يا رسول الله، مَن هؤلاء الذين إن تولَّينا استُبدِلوا بنا؟ وسلمانُ إلى جَنْبه، فقال: "هم الفُرْسُ، هذا وقومُه" (1).
هذا حديث صحيح على شرط مسلم، ولم يُخرجاه. ﷽ [48 - ومن تفسير سورة الفتح]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when this verse was revealed, "And if you turn away (from the religion), He will replace you with another people" [Surah Muhammad: 38], the Companions said: "O Messenger of Allah, who are those who will take our place if we turn away?" At that time Sayyiduna Salman al-Farisi (may Allah be pleased with him) was sitting beside him (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said (pointing to Salman (may Allah be pleased with him)): "This man and his people (meaning the people of Persia)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

(1) إسناده قوي من أجل عبد العزيز بن محمد الدَّراوردي وشيخه العلاء.
Grading: This chain is "strong" because of Abd al-Aziz bin Muhammad al-Darawardi and his shaykh al-Ala'.
فقد أخرجه الترمذي (3260)، وابن حبان (7123)، والطحاوي في "مشكل الآثار" (2136) من طرق عن العلاء بن عبد الرحمن، بهذا الإسناد.
Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi (3260), Ibn Hibban (7123) and al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (2136) recorded it via various routes from al-Ala' bin Abd al-Rahman with this same chain.
وقد روي عن أبي هريرة أيضًا في "الصحيحين" وغيرهما: أنه لما نزلت سورة الجمعة وقرأ النَّبِيّ ﷺ قوله تعالى: ﴿وَآخَرِينَ مِنْهُمْ لَمَّا يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ﴾ سُئل: من هؤلاء يا رسول الله؟ وكان فيهم سلمان الفارسي، فوضع النَّبِيّ ﷺ يده عليه وقال: "لو كان الإيمان عند الثُّريَّا لناله رجال من هؤلاء". وما في الصحيح أصح. وانظر تخريج طرقه في "مسند أحمد" 15/ (9406).
Reference / Source: It is narrated from Abu Hurayrah in the two Sahihs and elsewhere that when Surat al-Jumu'ah was revealed and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the verse ﴿وَآخَرِينَ مِنْهُمْ لَمَّا يَلْحَقُوا بِهِمْ﴾ [And others of them who have not yet joined them], he was asked: Who are these, O Messenger of Allah? Salman al-Farisi was among them, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) placed his hand on him and said: "Even if faith were at the Pleiades, some men from among these people would attain it."
Important point: What is in the two Sahihs is more sahih. See the tracing of its routes in "Musnad Ahmad" (15/ 9406).
