It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty: "And the heaven and the earth did not weep for them" [Surah al-Dukhan: 29], that he said: "At the death of a believer, the heaven and the earth weep for forty days."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) in its chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is, Allah willing, "sahih". Although the narration of Jarir (Ibn Abd al-Hamid) from Ata' bin al-Sa'ib is from after his confusion (ikhtilat), this report is narrated from Ibn Abbas through another route which strengthens it.
Reference / Source: Thus al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (3020) via Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ibn Abi Najih, from Mujahid, from Ibn Abbas (without mention of the recitation), and this chain is "sahih".
Reference / Source: Sufyan also has another shaykh in it, "Abu Yahya al-Qattat", from Mujahid, which was narrated by Waki' "al-Zuhd" (83), Ibn al-Mubarak (338), Ibn Abi Shaybah "al-Musannaf" (13/ 373) and al-Tabari "Tafsir" (25/ 125). It is also in the Book of Admonitions (al-Mawa'iz) of al-Nasa'i's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (Tuhfat al-Ashraf: 6433).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Yahya al-Qattat has "lin" (softness, i.e. slight weakness).
Reference / Source: Sufyan also narrated it, in al-Tabari (25/ 125), via Mansur bin al-Mu'tamir, from Mujahid, who said: "It used to be said: the earth weeps..."
