Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3581

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu al-Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: "Soon there will come people who will recite it with the words 'ghalabatir-Rum' (that is, the Romans have prevailed), whereas it (the correct reading) is 'ghulibatir-Rum' [Surah al-Rum: 2] (that is, the Romans have been defeated)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain can possibly be graded "hasan", because two narrators narrated from Marthad bin Sumayy and Ibn Hibban mentioned him in "al-Thiqat".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): We could not find a biography of the author's (al-Hakim's) teacher "Muhammad bin al-Khalil", but he is not alone in this narration.
Reference / Source: Thus Ibn Wahb recorded it in "Fada'il al-Qur'an" (printed with his Tafsir under the title 'Ulum al-Qur'an) from his "al-Jami'" (3/ 106); he said: Mu'awiyah bin Salih informed me, and then he mentioned it with this chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And other narrators also narrated it from Mu'awiyah bin Salih: Abu Salih Abd Allah bin Salih (the scribe of al-Layth) in al-Bukhari's "al-Tarikh al-Kabir" (7/ 417) and Ibn Asakir's "Tarikh Dimashq" (57/ 202), and Hammad bin Khalid al-Khayyat in al-Tha'labi's "Tafsir" (7/ 294).
Note / Clarification: The reading with a fathah on the ghayn and the lam is a "shadh" (irregular) reading which some read with, while the majority of reciters read with a dammah on the ghayn and a kasrah on the lam.
