It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty, "Do not enter houses other than your own houses until you have ascertained welcome" [Surah al-Nur: 27], that he said: (Here, originally) the scribe made a slip; (the correct wording) is "until you seek permission."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Grading: (1) The narrators are "thiqah", but it is "gharib jiddan" (very strange), as Ibn Kathir (6/ 38) said. Important point: This is a solitary report (khabar wahid) that goes against the "consensus" of the Ummah (on the soundness of the Uthmanic writing), while at that time the senior Companions were present and agreed on the soundness of the mushafs. Major exegetes (al-Nahhas, Ibn Atiyyah, al-Qurtubi, al-Razi, Abu Hayyan) criticised this report and rejected it. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (8423) through al-Hakim, and al-Tahawi in "Mushkil al-Athar" (4/ 249) from Muhammad bin Yusuf al-Firyabi. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (8423) narrated it from Qabisah bin Uqbah from Sufyan al-Thawri. Reference / Source: Al-Tahawi (4/ 250) and al-Bayhaqi (8421, 8422) narrated it via Abu Awanah and Hushaym, from Abu Bishr, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas. Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi (8424) narrated it from Abu Umar al-Hawdi, from Shu'bah, from Ayyub, from Sa'id bin Jubayr, from Ibn Abbas. ! General principle: Al-Bayhaqi says: These narrations of Shu'bah and Abu Bishr are among the "solitary reports" (akhbar al-ahad) whose chains are disputed, while the common recitation is established by "tawatur" (mass transmission), so it takes precedence. It is possible that this (the one of Ibn Abbas) was the earlier recitation and then the common recitation became prevalent. We do not claim that anything on which there is consensus or which is mass-transmitted is wrong, and how could that be said when it has a correct explanation and the generality of the Ummah follow it?!
