It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "And he called out within the darknesses" [Surah al-Anbiya: 87]; he said: (These darknesses are) the darkness of the night, the darkness of the belly of the fish and the darkness of the sea.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): Hajjaj (Ibn Muhammad al-A'war) differed, in al-Tabari ("Tafsir": 17/ 80), narrating it from Isra'il, from his grandfather Abu Ishaq, from 'Amr bin Maymun as his own statement (mawquf).
