Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3467

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah Almighty: "Except for one who has taken a covenant with the Most Merciful" [Surah Maryam: 87]; he said: Take a covenant with the Most Merciful, for on the Day of Resurrection Allah Almighty will say: "Whoever has a covenant with Me, let him stand up." The narrator said: We said: O Abu Abd al-Rahman, (what is that covenant?) teach us. He said: Say: 'Allahumma fatir al-samawati wal-ard, 'alim al-ghaybi wash-shahadah, inni a'hadu ilayka fi hadhihil-hayatid-dunya, innaka in takilni ila 'amalin tuqarribni minash-sharri wa tuba'idni minal-khayr, wa inni la athiqu illa bi-rahmatik, faj'alhu li 'indaka 'ahdan tu'addihi ilayya yawmal-qiyamah, innaka la tukhliful-mi'ad' (O Allah, Creator of the heavens and the earth, Knower of the unseen and the seen, I make this covenant with You in this worldly life: that if You leave me to my own deeds, they will bring me closer to evil and take me further from good, and I rely on nothing but Your mercy; so make this (pledge) a covenant for me with You, which You will fulfil for me on the Day of Resurrection. Indeed, You do not break Your promise).
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): (2) Here the printed edition adds: "بأني أشهد أن لا إله إلَّا أنت وحدك لا شريك لك، وأنَّ محمدًا عبدك ورسولك" (that I bear witness that there is no god but You alone, with no partner, and that Muhammad is Your servant and messenger). Among the source works, this addition occurs only in "Musnad Ahmad".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): (3) In the printed edition, and likewise in the source works, the wording is: "إلى نفسي" (to myself).

Grading: (4) This report is "sahih" as mawquf, but this chain is "munqati'" (broken).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Between 'Awn (Ibn 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah bin Mas'ud) and al-Aswad bin Yazid, the link "Abu Fakhitah Sa'id bin 'Ilaqah" is missing, and Abu Fakhitah is "thiqah".
Reference / Source: Ibn Abi Shaybah (10/ 329) recorded it from Waki', and al-Tabarani (8919), and from him Abu Nu'aym in "al-Hilyah" (4/ 271), via 'Abdullah bin Raja' and 'Asim bin 'Ali; all three of them from al-Mas'udi ('Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin 'Utbah), from 'Awn bin 'Abdullah, from Abu Fakhitah, from al-Aswad bin Yazid, from Ibn Mas'ud, with "Abu Fakhitah" present between 'Awn and al-Aswad.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Although al-Mas'udi suffered "ikhtilat" (deterioration of memory), the narration of Waki' and 'Abdullah bin Raja' from him was before his ikhtilat.
Note / Clarification: Ahmad (7/ 3916) recorded it via Hammad bin Salamah, from Suhayl bin Abi Salih and 'Abdullah bin 'Uthman bin Khuthaym, from 'Awn bin 'Abdullah, from Ibn Mas'ud as "marfu'"; this chain is "mu'dal" (two narrators missing), its being marfu' is "shadh" (anomalous), and the preserved version is that it is "mawquf".
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Fudayl al-Dabbi also recorded it as "mawquf" in "al-Du'a'" (51) via al-Qasim bin 'Abd al-Rahman bin 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud, from his grandfather 'Abdullah bin Mas'ud.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Qasim is "thiqah", but his narration from his grandfather is "mursal" (broken).
