Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3422

It is narrated from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid; he said: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) used to pray Maghrib while we thought that the sun was still up. One day we looked towards it, and he asked: "What are you looking at?" The people said: "At the sun." Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "By the One besides Whom there is no god! This is the time of this prayer." Then he recited this verse: "Establish prayer from the decline of the sun until the darkness of the night." [Surah al-Isra': 78] And he said: "This is the decline of the sun."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it with this wording.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: (3) Its chain is "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq is "Ibn Ibrahim al-Hanzali Ibn Rahawayh", Jarir is "Ibn Abd al-Hamid", Ibrahim is "Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i", 'Umarah is "Ibn 'Umayr al-Kufi", and Abdullah is "Ibn Mas'ud" (may Allah be pleased with him).
Reference / Source: And al-Bayhaqi documented it (1/ 370) from Abu Abdullah al-Hakim, with this chain.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq documented it in "al-Musannaf" (2161) from Yahya bin al-'Ala', al-Tahawi in "Ma'ani al-Athar" (4/ 154) via Hafs bin Ghiyath, and al-Tabarani at (9131) via Za'idah bin Qudamah. All three of them (Yahya, Hafs, Za'idah) narrate it from al-A'mash with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Except that Yahya and Za'idah did not mention "'Umarah" in their chain, and added at the end: "This is the ghasaq (darkness) of the night." But Hafs bin Ghiyath reversed the text (qalb), so he stated that "duluk" means the rising of the sun and "ghasaq al-layl" means its setting, and this narration of his is "shadh" (unacceptable).
Details of the narration: And Salamah bin Kuhayl narrated it, with al-Tahawi (1/ 155), from Abd al-Rahman bin Yazid, from Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), and in it are the words: "Its duluk is when it sets, and ghasaq al-layl is when it becomes dark, so the prayer is between the two."
Note / Clarification: Ibn Mas'ud's (may Allah be pleased with him) explanation of "duluk al-shams" as "the setting of the sun" is well known from him through several routes. See: "Tafsir al-Tabari" (15/ 134-135).
General principle: Whereas the majority (jumhur) of scholars hold that "duluk" means the declining of the sun (zawal) at midday. See: "Tafsir al-Tabari" (15/ 136) and "Tafsir al-Baghawi" (5/ 114), and others.
