Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3408

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: On the day of Uhud, sixty-four (64) men of the Ansar and six (6) of the Muhajirun were martyred, and the idolaters mutilated their bodies (cutting off limbs); and among these martyrs was Sayyiduna Hamzah (may Allah be pleased with him). At this the Ansar said: "If one day we gain such a hold over them, we will certainly do worse to them than this." Then, when the day of the Conquest of Makkah came, Allah Almighty revealed this verse: "And if you punish, then punish with the like of that with which you were harmed; but if you are patient, it is certainly better for those who are patient." [Surah al-Nahl: 126] On this occasion a man said: "After today there will be no Quraysh (that is, they will be hunted down and killed)." So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Hold back your hands from all the people except four (that is, pardon them)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), and the two Shaykhs did not record it.
