Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3367

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: "O enemy of Allah and enemy of Islam! You have embezzled the wealth of Allah." I said: "I am neither the enemy of Allah nor the enemy of Islam; rather, I am the enemy of whoever is hostile to them both. And I have not embezzled anything from the wealth of Allah; rather, these are the prices of my camels and shares that accumulated." Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated the same words to me, and I repeated the same reply. He fined me twelve thousand. Then I stood in the morning prayer and supplicated: 'Allahumma ighfir li-amir al-mu'minin' (O Allah, forgive the Commander of the Believers). Some time after this incident, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) again offered me a post, but I refused. He asked: "Why do you refuse, when Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him) himself asked for a post, and he was far better than you?" I replied: "Indeed, Sayyiduna Yusuf (peace be upon him) was a prophet, son of a prophet, son of a prophet, son of a prophet, while I am the son of Umaymah, and I fear three things and two (that is, five)." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Can you not simply say five?" I said: "No." He asked: "Tell me what they are." I said: "I fear that I might say something without knowledge, give a fatwa without knowledge, that my back be flogged, that my honour be reviled, and that my wealth be taken from me by beating."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In the manuscripts it is "wa-la" (without the hamzah at its beginning); what we have put in the text is from the printed edition, and it is the more apt reading, while in "al-Talkhis" it is "ala".

Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Ibn 'Asakir recorded it in "Tarikh Dimashq" (67/ 371) through the route of Hafs bin Ghiyath, from Hisham bin Hassan, with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Ma'mar recorded it in his "Jami'" (20659) from Ayyub, Abu 'Ubayd in "al-Amwal" (668) through the route of Yazid bin Ibrahim al-Tustari, and Ibn 'Abd al-Hakam in "Futuh Misr" (pp. 261-262) through the route of Sulayman bin Abi Sulayman; all three of them from Muhammad bin Sirin in the same way.
Details of the narration: However, in the narration of Ayyub from Ibn Sirin it reads "'Umar...", as mursal.
Reference / Source: And Abu 'Ubayd (667) and Ibn Sa'd in "al-Tabaqat" (5/ 252) recorded its first part through the route of 'Abd Allah bin 'Awn from Ibn Sirin. But with Abu 'Ubayd it is mursal from Ibn Sirin.
