Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3366

Musa bin Ulayy bin Rabah narrates from his father that he said: A man sought permission to enter upon Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said (to the doorkeeper): "Seek permission for the son of the best of people." Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Give permission to this son of the best of people to come in." When he entered, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: "Who are you?" He replied: "I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so, son of so-and-so." He began counting his forefathers from among the nobles of the Days of Ignorance. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: "Are you Yusuf bin Ya'qub bin Ishaq bin Ibrahim?" He said: "No." He said: "He (Sayyiduna Yusuf, peace be upon him) is the son of the best of people, whereas you are the son of the worst of people; you are counting out to me the names of the people of Hell."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it; and Ulayy bin Rabah is one of the senior Tabi'in.
