It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "O Messenger of Allah! I see that the signs of old age (white hair) have come upon you." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Surah Hud, Surah al-Waqi'ah, Surah 'Amma yatasa'alun and Surah Idha al-shamsu kuwwirat (with their terrifying themes) have made me old."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Imam Bukhari, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: The text between the square brackets is an addition from the margin of the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, and it is indispensable.
Grading: It is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (sound due to supporting reports); its narrators are, on the whole, thiqah (trustworthy). Technical note / Defect ('illah): However, there has been much disagreement over Abu Ishaq ('Amr bin 'Abd Allah al-Sabi'i) in it: whether it is connected (mawsul) or mursal, and who the intermediary between him and Abu Bakr is. Al-Daraqutni discussed the different versions at length in "al-'Ilal" (17) but gave no final ruling on it. Al-Tirmidhi mentioned some of them in "al-'Ilal al-Kabir" (664-665) and stated that he asked al-Bukhari about them, and he said: "Let me look into it", and he gave no ruling on it. Note / Clarification: Abu Kurayb: he is Muhammad bin al-'Ala'; and Shayban: he is Ibn 'Abd al-Rahman al-Nahwi. Reference / Source: Al-Tirmidhi recorded it in his "Jami'" (3297) from Abu Kurayb with this same chain; he added "al-Mursalat" in it and graded it hasan. It will come later at number (3819) through the route of Abu al-Ahwas from Abu Ishaq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The hadith of 'Uqbah bin 'Amir in al-Tabarani ("al-Kabir" 17/ 790) supports it, with the wording: "Hud and its sisters have made me grey", and its chain is hasan. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there are also narrations from a number of Companions, as al-Sakhawi mentioned in "al-Maqasid al-Hasanah" (606), but their chains are weak. General principle: Regarding his saying "Hud has made me grey", the scholars said: this is because of the terrors of the Day of Resurrection it contains and the calamities that befell past nations.
