It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning this saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: "And recite to them the story of the one to whom We gave Our signs, but he detached himself from them" [Surah al-A'raf: 175], that he said: "He is Bal'am bin Abar (a man by that name)."

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: It is like this in our manuscripts, while in the Mahmudiyyah manuscript, as (reported) in the al-Mayman edition, it is "Bal'am bin Ba'ura", which is a corruption here. For al-Tabari recorded this report in his "Tafsir" (9/ 191 and 120) from Mansur through several routes and said in it: "Bal'am bin Abar", although in some reports there are those who named him "Bal'am bin Ba'ura". 1/ 243. Grading: The isnad of this report is sahih. Note / Clarification: (In the chain) Mansur is Ibn al-Mu'tamir, Abu al-Duha is Muslim bin Subayh, and Abdullah is Ibn Mas'ud. Reference / Source: It is in "Tafsir Abd al-Razzaq" (1/ 243). Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (11129) recorded it by way of Shu'bah, from Mansur alone, with this same isnad.
