Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ishaq bin Ibrahim is Ibn Rahawayh, Jarir is Ibn Abd al-Hamid, Ibrahim is Ibn Yazid al-Nakha'i, and Hammam is Ibn al-Harith al-Nakha'i.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi recorded it in "al-Sunnah" (65) from Ishaq bin Rahawayh with this chain.
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin Khalaf Waki' recorded it in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (1/ 39 - 40) by way of Uthman bin Muhammad bin Abi Shaybah, from Jarir, with the same chain.
Reference / Source: Abu Nu'aym recorded it in "Hilyat al-Awliya'" (4/ 179) by way of Abu Bakr bin Ayyash, from al-A'mash, with the same chain.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq recorded it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 191), and likewise al-Tabari (6/ 253), Ibn Abi Hatim (4/ 1143), and Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" (2/ 737), by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Abu al-Bakhtari, from Hudhayfah.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Another chain for it has also been narrated from Sufyan: it is with Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi in "Tafsir Sufyan" (244), and by way of him Waki' in "Akhbar al-Qudat" (1/ 40), from Habib bin Abi Thabit, from Abu al-Tufayl, from Hudhayfah. Abu Hudhayfah al-Nahdi made mistakes in his narration from Sufyan, and we think it most likely that this is one of them.
Note / Clarification: "القُذَّة" is the singular of "القذذ", which are the feathers of an arrow. The meaning of "حذوَ القذة بالقذة" is: just as each of the two is measured to the size of the other and cut; it is used as a proverb for two things that are equal and do not differ. Ibn al-Athir said this in "al-Nihayah".
Grading: Its chain is hasan in corroborating chains and supporting reports on account of Hisham bin Hujayr.
Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi recorded it (8/ 20) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this chain.
Reference / Source: Sa'id bin Mansur recorded it in the Tafsir section of his "Sunan" (749), Muhammad bin Nasr al-Marwazi in "Ta'zim Qadr al-Salah" (569), Abu Bakr al-Khallal in "al-Sunnah" (1419), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (4/ 1143), and Ibn Battah in "al-Ibanah al-Kubra" (2/ 736), by various routes from Sufyan bin Uyaynah, with the same chain - but without the words: "إنه ليس كفرًا ينقل عن المِلّة، كفر دون كفر" (It is not disbelief that takes one out of the religion; it is a disbelief lesser than disbelief). In his narration from Sufyan (found with al-Khallal and Ibn Battah), Imam Ahmad made this statement - without the words "كفر دون كفر" - the words of Sufyan himself.
Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" (6/ 256), al-Marwazi (571) and (572), and Ibn Battah (2/ 734), by way of Sufyan al-Thawri, from Ma'mar, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, from Ibn Abbas, who said: "It is disbelief by it, but not like one who disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers."
Grading: Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: Abd al-Razzaq narrated it in his "Tafsir" (1/ 191) - and by way of him al-Tabari (6/ 256), al-Marwazi (570), Ibn Abi Hatim (4/ 1143), and Ibn Battah (2/ 736) - from Ma'mar, from Ibn Tawus, from his father, who said: Ibn Abbas was asked about this verse and he said: It is disbelief. Ibn Tawus said: And it is not like one who disbelieves in Allah, His angels, His books and His messengers.
