Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3208

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) concerning the saying of Allah Almighty, "That which they withheld will be made a collar around their necks on the Day of Resurrection" [Surah Al Imran: 180], that he said: "A serpent will come to him (the miser) and peck at his head, then it will become a collar around his neck and say: I am your wealth which you withheld."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it.

Technical note / Defect ('illah): The origin of this report is marfu' with a sahih chain, from the narration of Abd al-Malik bin A'yan and Jami' bin Abi Rashid, from Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah, from Ibn Mas'ud, from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), who said: "There is no one who does not pay the zakah of his wealth but on the Day of Resurrection it will be made to appear to him as a bald serpent that will coil around his neck." Ibn Mas'ud said: Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited to us its confirmation from the Book of Allah: ﴿وَلَا يَحْسَبَنَّ الَّذِينَ يَبْخَلُونَ بِمَا آتَاهُمُ اللَّهُ مِنْ فَضْلِهِ﴾ [And let not those who withhold what Allah has given them of His bounty think], to the end of the verse. Ahmad (6/ (3577)), Ibn Majah (1784), al-Tirmidhi (3012), and al-Nasa'i (2233) recorded it. "الشجاع الأقرع" is the male serpent; it is also said: any serpent.
