Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) relates that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) entered the mosque while Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) was speaking to the people. He went into the room in which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away, and removed from his (peace and blessings be upon him) blessed face the Yemeni cloak with which he (peace and blessings be upon him) had been covered. Then he looked at him (peace and blessings be upon him), bent over his (peace and blessings be upon him) radiant face to kiss it, and said: "By Allah, Allah Almighty will never bring upon you a second death after this death that has come to you." Then he went out to the mosque while Sayyiduna Umar was speaking to the people. Sayyiduna Abu Bakr said: "O Umar, sit down." He refused. Abu Bakr told him two or three times, but he would not comply. So Abu Bakr stood up and recited the tashahhud (of the sermon). When he had finished, he said: "To proceed: whoever used to worship Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), let him know that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has passed away; and whoever worships Allah, let him know that Allah is Ever-Living and will never die." Then he recited these verses: "And We did not grant eternal life to any human being before you" [Surah Al-Anbiya: 34] and "Muhammad is no more than a messenger; messengers have passed away before him" [Surah Al Imran: 144], up to "the grateful." As soon as he recited these verses, the people became certain of the death of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), to the extent that someone said: The people did not know that this verse had been revealed until Abu Bakr recited it. Al-Zuhri said: Sa'id bin al-Musayyib told me that Sayyiduna Umar bin al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "When Abu Bakr recited this verse, the ground seemed to give way beneath my feet until I fell to the ground, and I became certain that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), and they did not record it with this wording.
