It is narrated from Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to supplicate often: 'Ya muqallib al-qulub, thabbit qulubana 'ala dinik' (O Turner of hearts, keep our hearts firm upon Your religion). We said: O Messenger of Allah! Do you fear some trial for us when we have already believed in you? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Indeed, all the hearts of the children of Adam are between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful like a single heart; He turns them however He wills."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with these words. Rather, Muslim alone recorded the hadith of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) with the words "the hearts of the children of Adam".

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
(1948). Grading: Its chain is "strong" (qawi) on account of Abu Sufyan (Talhah bin Nafi'). Technical note / Defect ('illah): What is mahfuz (preserved) in this hadith of his is the narration of al-A'mash from him, from Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). This is how the majority of al-A'mash's students narrated it from him, contrary to Sufyan al-Thawri, as detailed in our commentary on the hadith of Anas in "Musnad Ahmad" 19/(12107). Al-Tirmidhi said: The hadith of Abu Sufyan from Anas is more correct; meaning, than his hadith from Jabir. Details of the narration: Part of the hadith of Anas has already appeared with the author (al-Hakim) under no. (1948). Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him), it was recorded by al-Khara'iti in "I'tilal al-Qulub" (12), Ibn Mandah in "al-Tawhid" (514), al-Bayhaqi in "Shu'ab al-Iman" (741) and "al-Da'awat" (209), and al-Jawraqani in "al-Abatil wa al-Manakir wa al-Sihah wa al-Mashahir" (38), via two routes from Muhammad bin Yusuf (al-Firyabi), with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari recorded it in his "Tafsir" 3/188, Abu Ya'la (2318), al-Daraqutni in "al-Sifat" (41), Ibn Mandah in "al-Tawhid" (514) and "al-Radd 'ala al-Jahmiyyah" (25), and Abu Ya'la bin al-Farra' in "Ibtal al-Ta'wilat" (303), via several routes from Sufyan al-Thawri, with the same chain. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Ibn Mandah preferred this narration over the narration of Abu Sufyan from Anas, and likewise Abu Musa al-Madini in "al-Lata'if min Daqa'iq al-Ma'arif" (317); thereby they both differed from al-Tirmidhi, who preferred the narration that mentions Anas bin Malik.
11/ (6569). Reference / Source: Muslim recorded it under no. (2654); see its full referencing in "Musnad Ahmad" 11/(6569).
