Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 3152

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the mosque and sat with him (peace and blessings be upon him). Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the virtue of prayer, fasting and charity. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Of the verses Allah has sent down to you, which is the greatest? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "'Allah - there is no god except Him, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all existence' [Surah al-Baqarah: 255]", and he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the whole verse to its end.
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, and the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it occurs in the manuscripts: "al-Shaybani", and it is likewise in "Ithaf al-Maharah" (17574); but our strong assumption is that it is a corruption of "al-Shami", because 'Ubayd bin al-Hashas (also called al-Khashkhash) is not known to have any narrator other than Abu 'Amr (also called Abu 'Umar) al-Dimashqi al-Shami, and he is only ever ascribed as a Syrian (Shami).

Grading: Its chain is very weak because of the weakness of Abu 'Amr al-Dimashqi and 'Ubayd bin al-Hashas. Al-Barqani reported that al-Daraqutni said about al-Mas'udi from Abu 'Amr al-Dimashqi: matruk (abandoned); and he said the same about Abu 'Amr from 'Ubayd bin al-Hashas.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Mas'udi is Abd al-Rahman bin Abd Allah bin 'Utbah bin Abd Allah bin Mas'ud.
Reference / Source: Ahmad recorded it within a longer hadith in "al-Musnad" (35/21546) and (21552), via two routes from al-Mas'udi, with this same chain.
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: On this topic there is what makes it unnecessary: the hadith of Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) in Muslim (810). He said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, do you know which verse of the Book of Allah that you have is the greatest?" I said: Allah and His Messenger know best. He said: "O Abu al-Mundhir, do you know which verse of the Book of Allah that you have is the greatest?" I said: ﴿اللَّهُ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا هُوَ الْحَيُّ الْقَيُّومُ﴾ [Allah, there is no god but He, the Ever-Living, the Sustainer of all]. He struck me on my chest and said: "May knowledge be a delight for you, Abu al-Mundhir."
