It is narrated from Sayyidah Asma' bint Yazid (may Allah be pleased with her) that she said: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reciting: "O My servants who have transgressed against themselves, do not despair of the mercy of Allah" (here he, peace and blessings be upon him, read "rahmat Allah" with nasb), and then he recited: "Indeed, Allah forgives all sins," and He does not care (about anyone). [Surah al-Zumar: 53]
This hadith is gharib (unusual) and 'ali (with a high chain), and in this book of mine I have not mentioned any narration from Shahr bin Hawshab other than this one hadith.

173. Note / Clarification: The word "bi-al-nasb" (with the fathah) has dropped out of manuscript (B), and we do not know what is meant by nasb here: is it the ya' of (عبادي) or the nun of (تقنطوا)? For various readings have come in both. See al-Khatib's "Mu'jam al-Qira'at" 8/ 172 and 173.
Grading: Its chain is "da'if". Technical note / Defect ('illah): Because Shahr bin Hawshab is alone in narrating it; Shahr's hadith is taken into account in corroborating chains and supporting reports, but when he is alone he is considered weak, because of his inconsistency and his munkar narrations. Reference / Source: Ahmad 45/ (27569) narrated it from Yazid bin Harun with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ahmad (27596), (27606), (27613), and al-Tirmidhi (3237) narrated it by various routes from Hammad bin Salamah. Grading: Al-Tirmidhi graded it "hasan". Note / Clarification: Regarding the words "wa la yubali" (and He does not mind) at the end of the hadith, Abu Ja'far al-Nahhas said in "I'rab al-Qur'an" 4/ 13: "This reading is by way of tafsir." That is, these words are not part of the verse; rather, they were said as explanation and clarification.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is an "oversight" by the author (al-Hakim) (may Allah have mercy on him), for several of his hadiths will come with him, such as (3051) and (4113) and others.
