It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the people of the Fire are gathered in Hell, and with them are those of the people of the Qiblah (the Muslims) whom Allah wills, the disbelievers will say (to the Muslims): 'What has your accepting Islam availed you, when you too are now with us in Hell!' They will reply: 'We had some sins, and we were seized for them.' Allah Almighty will hear this conversation of theirs, so He will command that the people of the Qiblah who are in Hell be taken out. Seeing this, the disbelievers will say: 'Would that we too had been Muslims, so that we too would have been taken out (of Hell) in the same way,'" and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited this verse: "Alif Lam Ra. These are the verses of the Book and a clear Qur'an. Perhaps those who disbelieve will wish that they had been Muslims." [Surah al-Hijr: 1 - 2] Here he (peace and blessings be upon him) recited the word "rubbama" with a shaddah (doubling) on the letter ba.
This hadith has an authentic (sahih) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Grading: This hadith is "hasan li-ghayrihi" (hasan due to supporting reports). Technical note / Defect ('illah): This chain, however, is "da'if" (weak) because of the weakness of Khalid bin Nafi' al-Ash'ari. Details of the narration: Abu al-Sha'tha' here is "Ali bin al-Husayn bin Sulayman al-Hadrami". Reference / Source: Al-Bayhaqi narrated it in "al-Ba'th wa al-Nushur" (79) from Abu Abd Allah al-Hakim with this same chain. Reference / Source: Ibn Abi 'Asim narrated it in "al-Sunnah" (843) from Abu al-Sha'tha' with this same chain. Reference / Source: Al-Wahidi narrated it in "al-Wasit" 3/ 38-39 by way of Mahmud bin Muhammad al-Wasiti, from Abu al-Sha'tha'. Al-Haythami mentioned it in "Majma' al-Zawa'id" 7/ 45 and attributed it to al-Tabarani, Technical note / Defect ('illah): and he declared it defective because of Khalid bin Nafi'. Reference / Source: Al-Tabari narrated it in his "Tafsir" 14/ 2 by way of Ali bin Sa'id bin Masruq al-Kindi, from Khalid bin Nafi', except that he reported these words in it from Abu Musa: "It has reached us that when the Day of Resurrection comes and the people of the Fire are gathered together…" (etc.). (11207). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: It is supported (a shahid) by the hadith of Jabir bin Abd Allah (may Allah be pleased with him) found in al-Nasa'i (11207). Corroborating chains and supporting reports: And by the hadith of Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) found in Ibn Hibban (7432); see its further supporting reports there. General principle: (رُبَّما) with a doubled ba' was read by Ibn Kathir, Abu 'Amr, Ibn 'Amir, Hamzah and al-Kisa'i; 'Asim and Nafi' read it lightly as (رُبَما). It is reported from Abu 'Amr that he used to read it both ways (light and doubled). See "al-Sab'ah" by Ibn Mujahid, p. 366.
