Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2929

It is narrated from Alqamah (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was at Arafah and said: O Commander of the Believers! I have come from Kufah, and I left there a man who dictates copies of the Qur'an from memory. On hearing this, Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) became intensely angry and swelled (with anger) so much that he nearly filled the space between the two wooden bows of the saddle. Then he said: Woe to you! Who is he? He said: Abdullah bin Mas'ud. Then his anger kept subsiding little by little until he returned to his former state, and he said: Woe to you! By Allah! As far as I know, there is now no one among the Muslims more entitled to this task than he is. I will tell you the reason for this: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would often stay up late into the night at the house of Abu Bakr consulting about the affairs of the Muslims. One night I too was with him. When we came out, a man was praying in the mosque. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood listening to his recitation. When we had difficulty recognising him, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh (and tender) just as it was revealed, let him recite it according to the recitation of Ibn Umm Abd (Abdullah bin Mas'ud)." Then the man began to supplicate, and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Ask! You will be given." Sayyiduna Umar says: I thought that in the morning I would go and give him this good news, but when I went I found that Abu Bakr had reached there before me and had already given him the good news. And by Allah! Never did I try to outstrip Abu Bakr in any good deed but that he was always ahead of me.

Grading of the hadith and chain: The hadith is "sahih"; all its narrators are thiqah except Ahmad bin Abd al-Jabbar al-'Utaridi, who falls short of the rank of thiqah and is "hasan al-hadith" (fair in hadith).
Break in the chain and intermediary: 'Alqamah (Ibn Qays al-Nakha'i) did not hear this hadith from 'Umar; rather he narrated it from "al-Qartha' al-Dabbi" from "Qays bin Marwan al-Ju'fi" (Qays bin Abi Qays) from 'Umar, as al-Bayhaqi said in "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (1/ 453). Al-Qartha' and Qays are both thiqah, and Qays is the man who came to 'Umar (as is made clear in al-Bayhaqi's narration).
Reference / Source: This narration of 'Alqamah from al-Qartha' was recorded by Ahmad (1/ 265) via 'Affan from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad from al-Hasan bin 'Ubaydullah al-Nakha'i from Ibrahim (al-Nakha'i) from 'Alqamah. The chain up to him is "sahih".
Reference / Source: As for the hadith of Abu Mu'awiyah, Ahmad (175) recorded it with the same chain and wording as the author (al-Hakim). Then he said: Abu Mu'awiyah said: al-A'mash narrated to us from Khaythamah (Ibn Abd al-Rahman al-Ju'fi) from Qays bin Marwan that he came to 'Umar …
Reference / Source: From it, the story of the night conversation (samar) at Abu Bakr's was recorded in abridged form by Ahmad (178, 228) and al-Tirmidhi (169) via Abu Mu'awiyah. Al-Tirmidhi said: This hadith is "hasan".
Reference / Source: From it, the statement "Whoever would like to recite the Qur'an fresh …" was recorded by Ahmad (36) and al-Nasa'i (8199) via various routes from al-A'mash. With al-Nasa'i it is via Abu Mu'awiyah and via Sufyan al-Thawri, and the route of Sufyan will come with the author in the next hadith.
Reference / Source: Al-Nasa'i (8198) also recorded it via Muhammad bin Fudayl from al-A'mash from Khaythamah from Qays bin Marwan from 'Umar.
Reference: This hadith has another route from 'Umar, whose takhrij will come under the hadith of 'Ali at number (5471).
