It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdur-Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "As a boy I was present with my paternal uncles at the 'Hilf al-Mutayyabin' (the Pact of the Perfumed Ones), and it would not please me to have red camels in exchange for breaking that pact."
This hadith has an authentic chain (sahih al-isnad), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading of the chain: Its chain is "hasan" because of Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq (al-Madani).
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (3/ 1676) narrated it, and Ibn Hibban (4373) by way of Abu Bakr bin Abi Shaybah. Both of them (Ahmad and Ibn Abi Shaybah) narrate it from Isma'il Ibn 'Ulayyah with this same chain.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (3/ 1655) narrated it through Bishr bin al-Mufaddal, from Abd al-Rahman bin Ishaq.
Linguistic and historical explanation: "Al-Mutayyabun" (the perfumed ones) is the plural of "mutayyab" (in the passive participle form). They were five tribes: Banu Abd Manaf, Banu Asad bin Abd al-'Uzza, Banu Taym, Banu Zuhrah and Banu al-Harith bin Fihr. What happened was that when Banu Abd Manaf (Banu Hashim) wanted to take the services of the Ka'bah (the hijabah, rifadah, liwa' and siqayah) from the possession of Banu Abd al-Dar, and Banu Abd al-Dar refused, the tribes mentioned above gathered in the Pre-Islamic era in "the house of Ibn Jud'an". They took a firm oath to help one another and not to abandon one another. Then Banu Abd Manaf brought out a bowl filled with perfume; they all dipped their hands in it and made the pact, then wiped the Ka'bah with their hands for emphasis. For this reason they were named "al-Mutayyabun".
Linguistic explanation: "Humr al-na'am" means red camels, and red camels were considered by the Arabs the most excellent and valuable of possessions.
