It is narrated from Sayyiduna Rukanah bin Abd Yazid (may Allah be pleased with him) that in the blessed time of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) he divorced his wife with the word «al-battah» (that is, decisively and irrevocably). He relates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about this, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "What did you intend by it?" He said: I intended only one divorce. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah (did you mean only one)?" He said: Yes, by Allah! He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then it is what you intended."
Although the two Shaykhs turned away from the narration of al-Zubayr bin Sa'id al-Hashimi in their two Sahihs, this hadith has a corroborating narration (mutabi') from the family of Rukanah bin Abd Yazid, by which the hadith is established as sahih.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): This is how it occurs with the author (al-Hakim): Abd Allah bin 'Ali narrating directly from his grandfather, whereas with others Abd Allah narrates it from his father, from his grandfather. This is specifically in the narration of Jarir bin Hazim.
Grading: This hadith is "hasan", but this (particular) chain is "da'if" (weak). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its weakness is due to the weakness of al-Zubayr bin Sa'id and the unknown status (jahalah) of Abd Allah bin 'Ali bin Yazid bin Rukanah. Al-Zubayr was also inconsistent (idtirab) in it, as al-Bukhari said (as reported by al-Tirmidhi), and al-Daraqutni made this clear in his "Sunan" (3981-3983). However, this hadith is narrated from Rukanah through another route with a "hasan chain", which is in the next chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (39/ 24009/ 91) from Yazid bin Harun, and (24009/ 92) from Ishaq bin 'Isa al-Tabba'; Abu Dawud (2208) and Ibn Hibban (4274) via Abu al-Rabi' Sulayman bin Dawud al-Zahrani al-'Ataki; Ibn Majah (2051) via Waki' bin al-Jarrah; and al-Tirmidhi (1177) via Qabisah bin 'Uqbah. All five narrate it from Jarir bin Hazim, from al-Zubayr bin Sa'id, from Abd Allah bin 'Ali bin Yazid bin Rukanah, from his father, from his grandfather. Thus all of them added "'Ali bin Yazid bin Rukanah" to the chain.
