Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2793

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Safinah (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) invited a man and prepared food for him. Then he said (to Sayyidah Fatimah, may Allah be pleased with her): "If only we had invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) as well, so that he could eat with us." So they invited the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He came, but on seeing an ornate, decorated curtain (or a cloth with patterns and designs) hung in a corner of the house, he turned back. Sayyidah Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said (to Sayyiduna Ali): "Go after him and ask: 'O Messenger of Allah, what made you turn back?'" (When he asked,) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "It is not fitting for a prophet to enter a house that has been adorned (with worldly finery)."
The chain of this hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Note / Clarification: In manuscript (Z), "أحمد" is written (in place of the word "أحد"), which is an error.

Note / Clarification: The manuscripts have the word "فراشا" (bedding) thus, whereas all the other sources of the takhrij of this hadith have the word "قراما" (curtain/cloth), i.e. with 'qaf' in place of 'fa'' and 'mim' in place of 'shin'. "Qiram" has been explained as a cloth with decorations and designs, and it has also been explained as a cloth of very thick wool that is spread in a "howdah". Perhaps it was also spread in the house, in which case the meaning of firash would be qiram; or else this word is a corruption of "qiram". And Allah the Exalted knows best.

Grading: The chain of this hadith is "qawi" (strong) because of "Sa'id bin Jumhan".
Reference / Source: Ibn Hibban (6354) narrated it from Ibn Khuzaymah, from al-Rabi' bin Sulayman, with this same chain.
Details of the narration: But it is abridged, with the words: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would not enter a house that was decorated (with images)".
Reference / Source: Ahmad (36/ 21922, 21934) recorded it from Abu Kamil Muzaffar bin Mudrik; Ahmad (21926) and Ibn Majah (3360) through the route of 'Affan bin Muslim; Ahmad (21933) from Bahz bin Asad; and Abu Dawud (3755) from Musa bin Isma'il. These four narrators narrate it from "Hammad bin Salamah" with this same chain.
Note / Clarification: "المزوق" means: adorned (decorated).
