Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 278

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said to us while we were gathered around him: "Are you not pleased to be a quarter of the people of Paradise? For you is a quarter, and for all the other nations three quarters." We said: O Messenger of Allah! That is a lot. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think of being a third?" We said: That is even more. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What do you think of being half?" We said: That is much more. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The people of Paradise will be in one hundred and twenty rows, and you will be eighty rows of them." We said: O Messenger of Allah! That makes two thirds. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Yes! (It is so)."
According to most views, Abd al-Rahman bin Abdullah bin Mas'ud did not hear from his father.

Explanation & Benefits

Note / Clarification: The text from "an jaddihi" (from his grandfather) up to here is missing from manuscript (B) and the printed edition.

Grading: Its chain has some weakness (lin), because al-Harith bin Hasirah is not very strong.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it (7/4328) from Affan, from Abd al-Wahid bin Ziyad, with this chain.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Abu Ishaq al-Sabi'i (an imam and a proof) differed from al-Harith bin Hasirah: he narrated something similar via Amr bin Maymun from Ibn Mas'ud, except that in it he narrated as marfu' from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "I hope that you will be half the people of Paradise."
Reference / Source: Al-Bukhari (6528), Muslim (221) and others narrated it.
Important point: The reconciliation between this and the hadith of Buraydah about two-thirds is that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said this about half out of hope, then it became clear to him that the matter was beyond what he had hoped, so he informed of what is in the hadith of Buraydah; and Allah knows best.
Reference / Source: Al-Sindi said this in his marginal notes (hashiyah) on "Musnad Ahmad".

Technical note / Defect ('illah): His hearing from him was affirmed by Ali bin al-Madini and his student al-Bukhari. Two statements are reported from Ibn Ma'in about it, and Ahmad withheld judgement.
Important point: The preponderant view is that he heard a little from him, and we have adopted the view of Ibn al-Madini and al-Bukhari as long as there is no nakarah (objectionable content) in his hadith; and Allah Most High knows best.
