It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hadrad al-Aslami (may Allah be pleased with him) that he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) seeking help with his wife's dowry. He (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "How much dowry have you fixed?" He said: "Two hundred dirhams." He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even if you were carving silver out of the valley of Buthan, you would not have fixed more than this (that is, this dowry is far too much for your means)."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Hadith Grading
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This isnad is, if Allah wills, "sahih".
Technical note / Defect ('illah): The correct name is "Ibn Abi Hadrad" ('Abdullah), not merely Abu Hadrad. According to al-Waqidi (Tabaqat Ibn Sa'd 5/ 215), the correct account is that Ibn Abi Hadrad al-Aslami sought the help of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in the matter of his wife's dowry.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In 'Abd al-Razzaq's narration from Sufyan from Yahya bin Sa'id, Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi explicitly states that he heard it from "Ibn Abi Hadrad". Although the name "Abu Hadrad" appears in some narrations, that is an error (wahm); the correct form is "Ibn Abi Hadrad". Since Ibn Abi Hadrad lived until 71 AH, it is entirely possible that Muhammad bin Ibrahim heard from him.
Reference / Source: Ahmad narrated it in "al-Musnad" (24/ 15706) from Waki' and (15707) from 'Abd al-Razzaq, both of whom transmit it through the chain of Sufyan al-Thawri from Yahya bin Sa'id al-Ansari.
Reference / Source: Ahmad (39/ 23882) narrated it within a long hadith, through the narration of 'Abd al-Wahid bin Abi 'Awn from his grandmother.
Grading: Although 'Abd al-Wahid's grandmother is unnamed (unknown), her narration is accepted in corroborating chains and supporting reports.
Reference / Source: Ibn Ishaq narrated it in "al-Sirah" (Sirat Ibn Hisham 2/ 629) via "'amman la attahim" (from someone whom I do not suspect). Also, in Tarikh al-Tabari (3/ 34) it is reported through the chain of Ibn Ishaq from Yahya bin Sa'id from Muhammad bin Ibrahim.
Reference / Source: Al-Waqidi narrated it in "al-Maghazi" (2/ 777) through the route of Muhammad bin Sahl bin Abi Hathmah from his father, who said that 'Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad (may Allah be pleased with him) said.
Important point: This chain is suitable for "i'tibar" (support); the most balanced view regarding al-Waqidi is that his hadith may be recorded for support, as al-Dhahabi established this rule in his biography in "Siyar A'lam al-Nubala'".
Reference / Source: Muhammad bin al-Hasan bin Qutaybah narrated it in his "Fawa'id", Ibn Qani' in "Mu'jam al-Sahabah" (2/ 132), Ibn 'Asakir in "Tarikh Dimashq" (27/ 340) and al-Diya' al-Maqdisi in "al-Mukhtarah" (9/ 221), through the route of Isma'il bin al-Qa'qa' bin 'Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad, who said: My grandfather 'Abdullah bin Abi Hadrad married, and he mentioned something similar.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Al-Diya' al-Maqdisi says that Isma'il's hearing from his grandfather is not certain. We say: this narration is clearly "mursal", but despite that it is suitable for support (i'tibar).
Corroborating chains and supporting reports: The preceding hadith of Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) is a shahid (supporting report) for it.
