It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id al-Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) that some wealth came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) began distributing it with his blessed hand to the right and to the left. Among those present was a man wearing garments raised high, bearing distinctive marks, and between his eyes (on his forehead) was the mark of prostration. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) kept extending his hand right and left, giving out the wealth until it was finished. When the wealth was finished, that man turned his back and walked away, saying: By Allah, you have not acted justly today. The narrator said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) began turning his palms over and said: "If I do not act justly, then who will act justly after me? Listen! Soon a group will emerge who will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes right through the game; then they will not return (to the religion) until the arrow returns to its notch. They will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats; they will speak very well, but their deeds will be bad. Whoever meets them should fight them, for whoever kills them has the best reward, and whoever is killed by them has the best martyrdom. They are the worst of all creation; Allah is free of them. They will be killed by that one of the two groups which is closer to the truth."
This hadith is sahih (authentic), but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it with this context. Abd al-Malik bin Abi Nadrah is one of the rare narrators among the Basrans, and to my knowledge I have no other hadith through him that reached me with so high (short) a chain as this one.

Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is hasan because of 'Abd al-Malik bin Abi Nadrah and Sahl bin 'Attab. Reference / Source: Ahmad (18/11537) and (11621), al-Bukhari (6163) and (6933), Muslim (1064), and al-Nasa'i (8507, 8508, 11156) via Abu Salamah bin 'Abd al-Rahman; Ahmad (11621), al-Bukhari (6163), Muslim (1064) and al-Nasa'i (8508) via al-Dahhak al-Mishraqi; Ahmad (111008, 11648, 11695), al-Bukhari (4351, 4667, 7432), Muslim (1064), Abu Dawud (4764), al-Nasa'i (2370, 3550, 11157) and Ibn Hibban (25) via 'Abd al-Rahman bin Abi Nu'm; all of these are narrated from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. Details of the narration: The name of this man is given as "Dhu al-Khuwaysirah al-Tamimi". This incident took place at the distribution of the small piece of gold that 'Ali sent from Yemen, which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) divided among four of those whose hearts were to be reconciled. The man's appearance is described as: sunken eyes, prominent cheeks, a protruding forehead, a thick beard, a raised lower garment and a shaved head. Details of the narration: The narration of Abu Salamah and al-Dahhak has that 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked permission to kill him, while the narration of Ibn Abi Nu'm mentions Khalid bin al-Walid. General principle: Al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (12/626) that there is no contradiction between them; it is possible that both of them asked permission. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: In the narration of Abu Salamah and al-Dahhak, the Prophet's (peace and blessings be upon him) parable of these Khawarij passing out of the religion is given just as it appeared in hadith number (2682) via Qatadah from Abu al-Mutawakkil from Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. Reference / Source: The mention of this group passing out of the religion has already appeared in hadith number (2681) via Qatadah from Anas and Abu Sa'id; see the full takhrij there.
Note / Clarification: Al-Bukhari and Muslim (the two Shaykhs) recorded narrations similar in meaning with some additions that are not present here, as was pointed out earlier.
