It is narrated from Sayyiduna Malik bin al-Harith (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I was present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) on the day of the Battle of Nahrawan. He searched for "al-Mukhdaj" (the deformed Khariji) but could not find him; his forehead began to sweat (from intense worry) and he became very distressed. Then, when he finally found him, he fell down in prostration and said: "By Allah, I have not lied, nor have I been told a lie (that is, the news given by the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proved true)."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it with the mention of the prostration of gratitude; and it is a gharib (singular) and sahih report on the subject of the prostration of gratitude.

Grading: This narration is sahih, although this chain is hasan because of Malik bin al-Harith. Technical note / Defect ('illah): Only Muhammad bin Qays al-Murhibi narrated from Malik bin al-Harith (whose name is also said to be al-Harith bin Qays, and who is Abu Musa al-Hamdani); he was among those who fought the Khawarij alongside 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). Important point: "Isra'il" here is Isra'il bin Yunus bin Abi Ishaq al-Sabi'i. Details of the narration: This report is also narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) through various other routes. Reference / Source: Muslim (1066), al-Nasa'i (8509) and Ibn Hibban (6939) narrated it via 'Ubaydullah bin Abi Rafi'; Muslim (1066), Abu Dawud (4768) and al-Nasa'i (8516-8518) via Zayd bin Wahb; Ahmad (2/672) via Abu Kathir, the freed slave of the Ansar; Abu Dawud (4769) via Abu al-Wadi' 'Abbad bin Nusayb (which will come at length with the author (al-Hakim) at number 8831); and al-Nasa'i (8514) via Sulaym bin Balj, (8515) via Kulayb bin Shihab and (8520) via 'Abidah al-Salmani. Details of the narration: All of them narrate from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) the story of searching for "al-Mukhdaj" among the slain on the day of Nahrawan. Most narrations have the words "Allah has spoken the truth" instead of "I have not lied, nor have I been lied to". 'Abidah's narration mentions saying "Allahu akbar" three times. Note / Clarification: None of them mentioned 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) prostrating upon seeing al-Mukhdaj. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A group of narrators from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned his prostration upon seeing al-Mukhdaj, as follows. Reference / Source: Ahmad (848) and (1255) and al-Nasa'i (8513) narrated it via Tariq bin Ziyad al-Kufi; 'Abdullah bin Ahmad in "al-Sunnah" (1515) and al-Bazzar (900) via Abu al-Mu'min al-Wathili; al-Bazzar (564) via Abu Wa'il Shaqiq bin Salamah; and al-Khatib in "Tarikh Baghdad" (14/464) via Qays bin Abi Hazim. Grading: All these narrations are narrated from 'Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) with "hasan" chains. Technical note / Defect ('illah): "al-Mukhdaj" means one who is deficient in form (with a congenital defect). Note / Clarification: Some narrations state explicitly that this person was deficient in his hand (mukhdaj al-yad).
