It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Groups will arise in my Ummah who will be very eloquent and sharp-tongued in reciting the Qur'an, but the Qur'an will not go beyond their throats; they will pass out of the religion as an arrow passes through the game. So when you meet them, kill them, for whoever kills them will be rewarded."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: (2) This hadith is sahih, and this chain is "qawi" (strong) because of 'Uthman al-Shahham; the hadith is also narrated from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) through two other routes, one of which is "hasan", as will come. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated it (34/20382) through Waki' bin al-Jarrah and (20446) from Rawh bin 'Ubadah; both of them narrate it from 'Uthman al-Shahham with this same chain. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: After this, the narration will also come via Hammad bin Zayd from 'Uthman al-Shahham. Grading: This chain is weak because of Bilal bin Buqtur, since he is a "majhul" (unknown) narrator. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad narrated something similar in meaning (20434) via Bilal bin Buqtur from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Grading: This chain of it is "hasan". Reference / Source: In Ibn Abi 'Asim's "al-Sunnah" (936) there is another route of it, from Nasr bin 'Asim from Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him). Note / Clarification: The literal meaning of the word "dhaliqah" is eloquent, articulate and fluent of tongue. Note / Clarification: "al-Taraqi" is the plural of "tarquwah"; it refers to the bone between the hollow at the base of the throat and the shoulder, and there are two such bones in the human body. Note / Clarification: "al-Ramiyyah" is the game that you aim at and shoot, and your arrow passes right through it. Some said it means any animal that has been shot at.
