It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to call a mare (a female horse) "faras" as well.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Technical note / Defect ('illah): In the manuscripts the name of 'Uthman bin Sa'id's teacher is written "Musa bin Sahl", while in al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar's "Ithaf al-Maharah" (20366) it is given as "Musa bin Isma'il". We think that "Isma'il" is a tahrif (scribal corruption) of "Sahl", and in this generation there is "Musa bin Sahl al-Ramli", who is thiqah; however, our strongest view is that mentioning him in this chain is itself an error and the correct name is "Musa bin Marwan al-Raqqi", as stated explicitly in Imam al-Bayhaqi's "al-Sunan al-Kubra" (6/330) in the narration of Abu 'Abdullah al-Hakim with this same chain. And Allah knows best.
Grading: Its chain is "sahih". Technical note / Defect ('illah): The full name of "Abu Hayyan al-Taymi" in the chain is Yahya bin Sa'id bin Hayyan, and "Abu Zur'ah" is Ibn 'Amr bin Jarir bin 'Abdullah al-Bajali. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud narrated it (2546) through Musa bin Marwan al-Raqqi, and Ibn Hibban (4680) via 'Amr bin 'Uthman al-Himsi; both of them narrate it from Marwan bin Mu'awiyah with this same chain.
