It is narrated from Sayyiduna Nu'aym bin Mas'ud al-Ashja'i (may Allah be pleased with him); he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say to the two envoys of Musaylimah (the Liar), when he (peace and blessings be upon him) had read Musaylimah's letter: "What do you two say?" They said: We say as he (Musaylimah) said. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "By Allah, were it not the rule that envoys are not killed, I would have struck off both your necks."
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of Muslim, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Explanation & Benefits

(4425). Grading: This narration is "sahih li-ghayrihi" (authentic due to other supporting reports), and its present chain is "hasan" because of Muhammad bin Ishaq (bin Yasar al-Muttalibi), who explicitly states that he heard it in the chain coming at number (4425). Reference / Source: Abu Dawud narrated it (2761) through Muhammad bin 'Amr al-Razi with this same chain. Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad recorded it (25/15989) through Ishaq bin Ibrahim al-Razi from Salamah bin al-Fadl, and in it Ibn Ishaq explicitly states that he heard it from Sa'd bin Tariq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: Imam al-Bukhari indicated (in al-Tirmidhi's "al-'Ilal al-Kabir": 715) that Ibn Abi Za'idah corroborated Ibn Ishaq in it, but we could not find this narration. Imam al-Daraqutni had not found it either; he mentioned in his book "al-Ghara'ib wa al-Afrad" (al-Maqdisi's "Atraf": 4401) that Ibn Ishaq is alone in narrating it from Abu Malik Sa'd bin Tariq. Corroborating chains and supporting reports: A supporting report for it is the hadith of Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), coming later at number (4426), in which the names of the two messengers, "Ibn al-Nawwahah" and "Ibn Uthal", are stated explicitly.
