Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2657

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Even the lowest person of my Ummah can grant protection (to an enemy)." And the hadith narrated from Sayyiduna Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with him) is well known: when he entered upon Muhammad bin Abi Bakr (at the time of his killing), he asked him: Are you Muhammad bin Abi Bakr? He said: Yes. He asked: Have you come with any guarantee of safety? He said: No. So he said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "The blood of all the Muslims is equal."
This hadith also has supporting reports from Sayyiduna Abu Hurayrah and Amr bin al-As (may Allah be pleased with them both).

Hadith Takhrij «
Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Adil Murshid et al.
Grading: This hadith is sahih, and this chain is "hasan" because of Kathir bin Zayd and al-Walid bin Rabah.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (14/ 8780) narrated it by way of Sulayman bin Bilal from Kathir bin Zayd.
Reference / Source: Imam Ahmad (15/ 9173) also narrated it by way of Abu Salih from Abu Hurayrah with these words: "The protection (dhimmah) of the Muslims is one; even the least of them may undertake it. Whoever breaks the covenant of a Muslim, upon him is the curse of Allah, the angels and all people; on the Day of Resurrection Allah will not accept from him any obligatory or voluntary deed (sarf or 'adl)". Its chain is sahih.
Reference / Source: This narration will come with the author (al-Hakim) in the wording of al-Walid bin Rabah's narration, from the hadith of 'A'ishah (may Allah be pleased with her) at no. (5110), whose chain is hasan, and from the hadith of Umm Salamah (may Allah be pleased with her) at no. (7015), and its chain too is hasan.

Grading: The author (al-Hakim) said it this way, but the well-known narration of this hadith is that 'Amr bin al-'As (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Muhammad bin Abi Bakr (who had been taken captive): The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The least of the Muslims may grant protection on their behalf", and he said nothing else to him. Technical note: Its chain is da'if because a narrator from Egypt in it is unnamed (mubham), but its marfu' part is sahih on the strength of the preceding hadiths of 'Ali and Abu Hurayrah (may Allah be pleased with them both).
