It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of Badr the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out with three hundred and fifteen (315) Companions, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) made this supplication: 'Allahumma innahum hufatun fahmilhum, Allahumma innahum 'uratun faksuhum, Allahumma innahum jiya'un fa-ashbi'hum' (O Allah, they are barefoot, so give them mounts; O Allah, they are unclothed, so clothe them; O Allah, they are hungry, so feed them to their fill). So Allah granted him (peace and blessings be upon him) victory on the day of Badr, and when they returned, there was not a single man among them who did not have one or two camels, and they had all become clothed and well fed.
This hadith is sahih (authentic) on the condition of the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim), but they did not record it, even though they both agreed on using Abu Abd al-Rahman al-Madhhiji as evidence.

Explanation & Benefits

Grading: Its chain is hasan, as al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar said in "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 32). Technical note / Defect ('illah): Its narrator Huyayy bin 'Abd Allah al-Ma'afiri is disputed; Imam al-Bukhari called him da'if, Imam Ahmad and al-Nasa'i considered him somewhat weak (layyin), while Ibn Ma'in and Ibn 'Adi said "there is no harm in him". Imam al-Dhahabi called him "salih al-hadith" (fair in hadith) in "Tarikh al-Islam" (3/ 853). Imam al-Tirmidhi graded one of his hadiths hasan, and Ibn Hibban and Abu 'Awanah graded his hadith sahih. Reference / Source: Abu Dawud narrated it at (2747) via Ahmad bin Salih with this same chain. Reference / Source: This narration will come later at no. (2674) by way of Yahya bin Sulayman al-Ju'fi from 'Abd Allah bin Wahb. 12/ 31 - 32. Note / Clarification: For reconciling (jam') the various narrations about the number of the people of Badr, see the discussion of al-Hafiz Ibn Hajar in "Fath al-Bari" (12/ 31-32).
Technical note / Defect ('illah): Imam al-Hakim (may Allah have mercy on him) said this, and he meant "Huyayy", but this is an error on his part, as we explained after hadith (273), because this is "Huyayy bin 'Abd Allah al-Ma'afiri".
