Mustadrak al-Hakim — Hadith 2583

It is narrated from Abu Rashid al-Hubrani that he said: I met the horseman of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), Sayyiduna al-Miqdad bin al-Aswad (may Allah be pleased with him), sitting on one of the large chests of the money-changers, and he was overflowing from it because of his heavy build. He intended to go on a military expedition. I said (seeing his infirmity): "Allah has excused you (from staying behind from jihad)." He said: "Surah al-Buhuth (that is, Surah al-Tawbah) has made (staying behind) hard for me. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, says: 'Go forth, whether light or heavy.' [Surah al-Tawbah: 41]."
This hadith has a sahih (authentic) chain of narration, but the two Shaykhs (Bukhari and Muslim) did not record it.

Note / Clarification: "Tabut al-sayrafi" (the money-changer's chest) means the safe or wooden box in which the money-changer (one who deals in money) keeps his wealth and cash secure.

Grading: This report is sahih, and its present chain is at the level of "hasan" because of Abd al-Rahman bin Maysarah, who is a Hadrami Syrian narrator.
Reference / Source: Imam Abu Ubayd al-Qasim bin Sallam narrated it in "al-Nasikh wa al-Mansukh" (no. 368), Ibn Abi Hatim in his "Tafsir" (vol. 6, p. 1802) and Abu Bakr al-Jassas in "Ahkam al-Qur'an" (vol. 4, pp. 309-310), via the route of Abu al-Yaman with this same chain.

Details of the narration: This narration will come later at hadith no. (5578) via the route of Baqiyyah bin al-Walid from Hariz bin Uthman, and at no. (3321) with the chain of Jubayr bin Nufayr from al-Miqdad, and that chain is fully sahih.
Note / Clarification: The word "al-bahuth" (with a fathah on the ba') is an intensive form on the pattern of "fa'ul", used for both masculine and feminine (like "sabur"). It refers to the surah that thoroughly searches out and exposes the hidden secrets of the hypocrites. Ibn al-Athir recorded it in "al-Nihayah" with a dammah on the ba' ("buhuth") and considered it the plural of "bahth".
