قَوْلُ الشُّهَدَاءِ رَبَّنَا بَلِّغْ قَوْمَنَا أَنَّا قَدْ رَضِينَا وَرَضِيَ عَنَّا رَبُّنَا

أخبرَنيه عبد الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي بَهَمذان، حدثنا إبراهيم بن الحُسين، حدثنا آدم بن أبي إياس حدثنا شعبة، عن أبي قيس، عن هُزَيل (2) بن شُرَحبيل قال: خرج ناسٌ فقُتِلوا، فقالوا: فلانٌ استُشهِد، فقال عبد الله: إِنَّ الرجلَ لَيقاتلُ للدُّنيا، ويقاتلُ ليُعرَف، وإنَّ الرجلَ لَيموتُ على فراشِه وهو شهيد، ثم تلا ﴿وَالَّذِينَ آمَنُوا بِاللَّهِ وَرُسُلِهِ (3) أُولَئِكَ هُمُ الصِّدِّيقُونَ وَالشُّهَدَاءُ عِنْدَ رَبِّهِمْ﴾ [الحديد: 19] (4).
It is narrated from Hudhayl bin Shurahbil that some people went out (for jihad) and were killed, and the people said: "So-and-so has been martyred." Then Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Indeed, one man fights for the world, and another fights so that he may be known (become famous), whereas a man may die on his bed and be a martyr (in the sight of Allah)." Then he recited this verse: "And those who believe in Allah and His messengers, it is they who are the truthful and the martyrs in the sight of their Lord." [Surah al-Hadid: 19].

(2) تحرَّف في النسخ الخطية إلى: هذيل بالذال بدل الزاي، وضبطه ابن ماكولا في باب هزيل وهذيل، وقال النووي في تهذيب الأسماء واللغات في اسم هُزيل: اعلم أنه قد يقع في بعض نسخ "المهذَّب" وكتبٍ مُصحَّفًا، فكتبوه بالذال، وهو غلط صريح وجهل فاحش، وإنما هو بالزاي باتفاق العلماء من كل الطوائف.
Correction: In the manuscripts "Hudhayl" (with dhal) is a corruption; the correct name is Huzayl (with zay). According to al-Nawawi, writing it with dhal is a clear mistake.
(3) في نسخنا الخطية غير (ب): ورسوله على الإفراد، ولم يذكرها أحد ممَّن اعتنى بالقراءات منسوبة إلى ابن مسعود أو غيره، والمثبت من نسخة (ب)، وهو الموافق للتلاوة.
Reading: In the manuscripts other than (B), "wa-rasuluhu" is in the singular, but in agreement with the recitation, manuscript (B) is correct.
(4) خبر صحيح، عبدُ الرحمن بن الحسن القاضي فيه ضعفٌ، وقد توبع عليه. إبراهيم بن ¤ ¤ الحسين: هو المعروف بابن ديزيل، وأبو قيس: هو عبد الرحمن بن ثروان، وعبد الله: هو ابن مسعود.
Grading: The report is sahih. The narrator Abd al-Rahman al-Qadi has some weakness, but he has been corroborated.
وأخرجه الطبري في "تفسيره" بأطول ممّا هنا 27/ 231 عن محمد بن المثنى، عن محمد بن جعفر، عن شعبة بهذا الإسناد

ولقوله: "وإنَّ الرجل ليموت على فراشه و هو شهيد" شاهدٌ مرفوع صحيح من حديث سهل بن حُنيف تقدم برقم (2443).
Supporting report: The statement "A man may die on his bed and still be a martyr" has a sahih supporting report in the marfu' hadith of Sahl bin Hunayf (2443).
